So, i had some time to reflect on my predicament while i was driving around ( also wishing there was a map, or better - having the home icons always be there no matter the distance, a teleporter, suicide option that would at least bring my rover back, *anything* !! )
... and the best i could come up with was to leave beacons behind as you go. They are cheap to build, and you can always pick them up again on your way home. Next time i go on a long drive, im definitely dropping a few of those as i go.
Did manage to find home after all, but it was practically random chance!
...
I took a rocket and used it to build an outpost ... without leaving a landing pod or signal ... now I can't find it anymore.
though luck
Yeaaah.. i mean.. i THINK you are supposed to be able to see the icon representing your home base no matter how far you go but.. you know.. pre-alpha game is pre-alpha.
beacons are about as close as we can get right now to what your just descibed.
This is kinof a hilarious problem in a space-themed game where knowing where you are ( or arent ) can be a matter of life and death.. but.. well get there :D
But if you have to go that far, it might be time to take a shuttle and set up a new habitat someplace new.
ripE, i think modifying terrain is a good option, esp down the road -- The proble i had with that route is that the draw distance / pop in and LOD loading of the game in its current state means you either have to build reallly biiiiiig weird structures to be able to see them from far away, or you gotta be right up on top of them to recognize them. Youd spend alot of time making changes to the terrain and it'd most likely be simpler/easier just to drop beacons as you go.
I think ultimately Saphire Crook is right and that the right thing to do is to jump to another area of the planet ( probably what devs intended ) but you know if its there.. people will want to drive out around in it : D
Also, you guys DO know that there is a compass at your feet, right? So if you go venturing, simply travel in 1 direction. This way, you can simply turn around and go back the exact opposite way.
But I agree, either a "ping" on your personal compass or have the home beacon viewable from anywhere.
totally noticed the compass, totally failed to use it properly. Just like IRL, compas without the map is no use lol.
Although!!! I just had this idea.. Imagine if once you were far away enough that you cant see your beacon over the horizon, a small pip appeared on the compass at your feet indicating which way was home ?? i think that would be cool !
You mean the exact same thing I said? Yes, I agree - it would be cool. That's funny: you quote what I said, then repeat what I said exactly while claiming it as your own original thought. o.0
Nothing 'wrong' with you having done so as I care not who gets credit and I doubt I'd be the only one with that 'common sense' approach to gps, but . . . it's pretty funny that you quoted me, then said it. hahaha.
:)
lol. I'm sure you probably just didn't read the last sentence, though. Good times. :)
*insert double, heartfelt facepalm*
omg, so sorry... i think i had the thought as i was reading and totally missed the 'personal compass' part... DUHH!
good time to drop dat 'great minds think alike' line ?? lawl
Yep. :)
ROFL. Exactly. :) I just thought it was hilarious. I'm pretty sure I've done this too. hehe :)
