Ironically I had to play the game with -NOSOUND (turns all sound off) launch parameter to get around unplayable framerate stuttering... It's something related to your sound hardware/software most likely. Maybe a USB headset?

WOW, This solution worked for me. I went through several forums from a google search and your answer was the only thing that worked. Just wanted to confirm that for anyone who has VR, Astroneer will not have audio while VR is plugged in.

Correction you have sound but only inside your VR headset. For some reason the game is ignoring what is the default audio device completely.

OK. Thanks for soloution! It does work for VR owners.

This soloution works but it is not really a soloutuion.

Is there no .ini setting we can apply to force a certain audio device.

This is the only game I have played where I have to disconnect the headset :-(

I have done manual stop on occulus services so the headset is not even fuctioning yet Astro still wants to use it?

I suggest you all use usbtreeview freeware so you can restart devices/ports/hubs & or eject devices without physically removing them. It's a workaround but this also makes it a bit easier.

google it if the link is censored, used it for a few years now for multiple things, my wifi card likes to crash my internal hubs, so I can restart them from the app rather than restart the PC.

had no sound in game with astro a50 unplugged my rift power an display an worked had sound in game

sometimes if i change the output device while the game is running, it will either not acknowledge the change or just kill the sound entirely but nothing in windows shows anything unusual, just wrong output/no output.

It usually happens when I go to stream and forget to switch to headset from speakers. I have to close Astroneer, then change sound output, then relaunch the game.

Well... that's pretty common for most games, like if I were to unplug and re-plug in my headphone jack, the audio wouldn't work again in most games. Windows likes to do weird stuff when it gets disconnected, changes its status and such.
