Its makes your learn from your faults and teaches you to act more carefully.
The problem with getting permanently lost is that you can't start a new base with just a rover like you almost can with a spacecraft.
And I bet you quite enjoyed the experience.
Now I just drop a beacon and dig an arrow out as needed :p
My problem beacons are you can't see them through the storms or through the clouds in the sky. This doesn't make sense because beacons should be designed to point you in the right direction regardless of weather patterns xD I don't think it's intentional and will be fixed in the future.
Maps are useful, but I think it should be a togglable item, since some folks don't like the idea.
