Black screen upon startup - 2025 fix

This used to be fixable with launcher settings, but with the launcher disabled, we no longer have this option.

New fix:
Find the install location, rightclick Mafia3DefinitiveEdition.exe, properties, compatibility, disable full screen optimization and start the game, settings can then be changed ingame to your preference.

Sadly, that did not work. It just crashed at the main menu instead. Ever since 2K updated / removed the need for the launchers /NONE/ of their games will work for me. It's nice having a bunch of games that I just can't play. I've tried probably everything at this point

Try before opening mafia to open something like file explorer. Or anything that can be change from alt+tab. Then open mafia and when the black screen appears press alt tab to go in the desktop. Then alt tab again to the game. This will force the game to start but keep in mind that can also crash at the very begining. So try multiple times. For me it crashed at the begining 3 times maximum then it played but on average I have 1 crash when I start it.

If the game closes (crash?) at the start instead of displaying the image with 'continue' you can solve this by adding an outbound rule to the firewall. Create one that blocks all outgoing network traffic for the game' .exe file and it will always start as is should.
