launches to black screen

why is this happening and what can i do to fix this. i bought the definitive edition assuming bugs like this wouldnt be a thing.

or when i do get it to work, it crashes immediately. if it doesnt crash immediately, it does when i try to turn it to full screen

Kind of familiar. I was able to get it to work in a broken state by leaving it open for a few minutes, and eventually a 2k sign in window would appear, but my cursor would be frozen and I couldn't click on agree. After alt tabbing out and back in, waiting a few more minutes, the game unfroze and I was able to finally get past that. Unfortunately, the game freezes or crashes whenever I alt tab after that.

I suspect the launcher update has broken the game.

By using compatibility changes to remove full screen to disable full screen optimizations, the game suddenly launches rapidly with music, but then CTDs before it can open the main screen.
Guess this also revealed to me that not only were the splash screens taking a long time to appear, they were also laggy when they did.

Kind of got it working by just using Steam's own -windowed function and it launches normally in a bordered window. I hear you can get rid of the borders but its a bit more effort. Black screen and performance improved by using windowed mode. Had to turn off full screen optimizations because it was causing CTD in windowed mode. Funny enough, even after turning off -windowed in Steam, the game is still stuck permanently opening in windowed mode so I am not able to figure out why its fullscreen suddenly broke (I always played this way previously)

But at least it is playable as I have it now. With bordered window mode and Steam Overlay disabled. No more lag, no more freeze. Can alt tab as I wish.

(copy commands and close after)

Kind of works, but I cannot launch unless it is windowed as well. I can full screen it after launching, but cannot start the launch in full screen or it'll just freeze on the black screen.
So if anyone is having this problem try adding -windowed to the launch commands as well. If you want full screen, use alt+enter after the main menu has successfully opened. as full screening while the splash screens are running may crash the game.

How to work with bad optimization.

launch in 2k launcher before change to no Vsync, Windowed and 60fps.
After in game mash the aim button to hear sound of drawing weapon and pres Alt+Enter. Will trigger fullscreen, then go into settings and turn on Vsync and unlimited FPS. MAKE SURE TO NOT TOUCH THE FULLSCREEN SLIDER IN THE MENU OR IT WILL CRASH.

This is the only way I was able to make it work for me.

tried all workarounds, the solution of Protercon worked only one time then now I did what Maverick suggested and launching the launcher results in launch of steam big picture.....LOL! yes I deactivated the launcher in the game previously. This game is a no go. I played 54 hours when launched years ago....no way now to play.

Hey dude, i actually found a fix for all bugs to all mafia games. Its just a click. Just.......turn off wifi. Yep thats it. If you have wifi closed all bugs magically go away. i hope this helped

I have to hit ctrl alt esc every time I load the game, and then when I click back to the window again it will start. Some times it crashes and I have to do it again, but I can get it to work enough to consider the game playable. Once it starts it starts. It works worse on my amd machine then on my intel, and it hates 2 monitors.

Easy quick fix:
1- Launch game with the launch option. The changes below do not work from this screens
settings option.
2- Let the game load in windowed mode.
3- Start the game play while in windowed mode.
4- Pause game and select options.
5- Select display.
6- Turn off VSYNC
7- Turn on fullscreen.
8- Turn VSYNC back on.
You should be good to go from there.
* This has to be done every time you launch the game until a patch is released.

This only occurred for me after I installed the 9070 XT. None of the launch options seem to work. I have no idea where to begin fixing this now.
