Suddenly lagging!
Hello everyone, I am playing Mafia 3 Definitive Edition almost 4 weeks and everything was smoothly with fixed 60 FPS. Just now it decided to decrease the FPS 25. I updated the nvdia driver. I own a MSI Katana with a 3070 nvidia. Does anyone know how can I fix it?

Thank you!

I had a weird experience like that the other night. My card is a 4070 Ti Super and it was skipping frames and Nvidia Geforce Now showed a frame rate of around 38. I quit out of unnecessary programs, made sure my G-sync monitor's Windows Display: Advanced setting was set to the same 150 FPS max as my monitor's menu showed, and that seemed to help.

Speaking of which I really wish there were a way to make the frame rate go above 60. Despite the Options: Display "unlimited" setting in the game mine won't do it. I tried other posters' solution of "Disable fullscreen optimizations" in the game exe's Properties but that did nothing.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply. Tomorrow I will try, hopefully it will work. The weird thing is that for the first couple of minutes the game is smooth but then it starts to decrease the FPS.

Today I read something about to increase the FPS above 60. I will attach the link, maybe is what you are looking for.

The issue is a problem with fullscreen settings. Put the game in windowed mode and you will suddenly get well above 60fps. You need either Borderless Fullscreen app, or Lossless Scaling, which will make windowed mode fullscreen (borderless) again keeping the framerate. LS will also have frame generation. I run this game at 180fps at all times with it. SILKY!

There is a similar issue, not exactly the same, with Atlas Fallen, which is also fixed with Lossless Scaling. Unlocked framerate feels terrible even at 150fps+ - locked to 60 feels better, but not great. Lossless Scaling makes locked 60 feel even better at 120fps.

I tried both the methods, from Papagenox and Skyler Meths but it doesn’t work.
When I set to window mode I can reach 115FPS but then it drops again to 25.
I do not understand why because after 4 weeks of gameplay it was fine and now it started. I updated everything but still!

Running at 115 FPS then it slows down to 25 FPS could be an automatic throttling if your GPU is overheating. A lot of laptops do that for heat and power control as well.

Make sure your GPU heat sinks are clear of dust and have free airflow around them. And that the GPU fans are all working, and the case fans are also working. I have seen fans go bad and stop working.

If could also be background processes running that kills your FPS. Did you install any new software from when the game worked fine?

Such as using the extremely inefficient 2K Game Store launcher, it can replicate itself several times in your computer memory which bricks some computers. The 2K launcher is easily bypassed.

There could be many reasons.

Hello, yes basically I installed Middle Earth Shadows of War because I’ve got frustrated that. Well Middle Earth gave me the same issue. I had installed The Division 2 but it worked perfectly with average frame of 85.
I ran the fans test with MSI Center and they are working perfectly fine. Now I add Middle Earth and Mafia 3 on the gaming mode of MSI center and now both game are working perfectly. I played it for 20 minutes each. Now I don’t know how I sorted but I think that probably the fans went off with those two games so that’s why after a couple of minutes the FPS dropped drastically.

its a buggy console port, from what ive heard the game is not built to go over 60fps therefore once it does it creates memory leaks and etc.

I've been looking for a reason why this runs so poorly in 2024.

I'm literally pulling 90+ fps at 7680x2160... but it stutters? I have tried changing everything to low, resolution minimal, fullscreen, windowed, disabling fullscreen optimization on the exe... just don't even know anymore. I played one mission, it's barely playable and so not worth the bother if it's going to run like this.

I remember it running like ♥♥♥♥ 4 years ago but it should have changed!

Installed on Samsung SSD 990 M.2
i7-13700K
32G DDR5
4090 24g

You have several options. Try Borderless Gaming to make the game smooth and be running at what you would expect 90fps to look like.

Run the game, make the game windowed, alt-tab out, load BG, add the executable to the right hand section of the app, then hit the third button from the top, go back to game

or

Use Lossless Scaling with Framegeneration (makes borderless or windowed go fullscreen) and turn that 90fps into 240fps at least. (while fixing the problem)

Not sure why this happens, but i find Mafia Def Edition did the same thing and Atlas Fallen also has a similar problem (only LSFG fixes it as the devs are ignorant dolts)

It should not stutter if it is on the M.2 SSD.

When I installed my OS on one M.2 and the game on another M.2 all the stutters stopped for me. So I can only guess it is the high (and weird) resolution that is the problem since this is a console port meaning it is made for smaller, normal resolutions below 60 FPS.

In fact some parts of the game you will get stuck at if the FPS is over 60 FPS because of the way the game was coded to use the FPS to determine game play.

Normal resolutions below 60 FPS ?

Would that lossless scaling be application specific settings of the nvidia app?
I'll usually do frame generation but didn't know that's what the lossless meant!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/993090/Lossless_Scaling/

That's a super interesting way to do it. It takes whatever is supposed to be drawn to the window and it intercepts it, scales it, and outputs it frame by frame? That's wild
Skylers Meth Jun 30, 2024 @ 6:22pm
The frame generation in LS even works ON TOP of standard framegeneration! If you have decent hardware it really is ..seemingly...quite miraculous in what it can do. It isn't perfect, there still can be some artifacting on the head of the main character if in a third person game, but really only when you stand still and turn the camera, but in motion its barely noticeable.
Saeryn Jul 1, 2024 @ 2:47pm
How serious are they about development, is there much interest? Artifacts seem like something they could hash out over time.
