Mafia 3 is not a Mafia game
Unpopular opinion but hear me out;

While this looks promising and exciting (the new trailer is great) I can't help but feel disappointed that this is what they are offering up for the next game in the Mafia series.

The Mafia is about the Italian immigrants and the following generations wrecking havoc in the underworld against any opposition. I'd have appreciated an installment set in the Mafia era of the 60s or 70s, a setting like Goodfellas gave us.

This is about power struggle, whites vs. blacks, Street syndicate vs. mafia, a biracial man on a revenge trip. I'm disappointed. It's similiar to the departure Max Payne 3 was from 1 and 2.

If 2k had put this game up and called it True Crime: New Orleans and I wouldn't have questioned it, Mafia 3 should not be the title of this game. Give us a true Mafia game again.

I definetly think this could be a great open world crime game but it won't be a Mafia game.

Your thoughts, opinions?

Yes mate you have made some good points....

I was thinking they could have done more with Vito like him becoming a godfather and all,but we know its more GTA esque which I think is good and bad.

Still its looking dope B|

the game is not yet released, so i believe it's a little bit of early to make negative judgements on it. I do hope there will be some interesting elements in mafia 3 and by the way, whether joe's alive or dead is kiling me!

I completely agree with you, OP. This has nothing to do with the first two games. The first Mafia being one of my all time favorites, this is so disappointing to me.

Also, seeing gameplay footage even furthers my impression of how much this has fallen - cars explode from just grazing stuff and everything looks so much more dumbed down and exaggerated. To me, Mafia was always the more realistic counterpart to GTA (I love both GTA and Mafia, but each have their own strengths) - this has ALSO been abandoned, it seems.

But the worst part is definitely the fact that you're basically fighting AGAINST the mafia, instead of being IN it. I can't fathom how these decisions were made. I'd really hoped for something more of a continuation of the 2nd Mafia, or at least something more... well... appropriate, than this.

I also completely agree that, the game on its own, doesn't look that bad (apart maybe from the exaggerations with explosions and such) - if only it was released as a new IP. Having the Mafia name, though, I will look at it as such... Which, unfortunately, is with very disinterested and disappointed perception.

On topic of the car explsions I heard somewhere that the devs did that on purpose to show off parts of the game but claimed it would not be like that when the game came out

Feels like saints row 3 all over again

I had the same initial impression. But when I saw the trailer (the first one) and the characters and plot, I thought it was really interesting. I think it looks pretty cool. From what it seems, the mob will still be the main focus of the game's plot, just this time it seems you'll be against them.

Yeah I really do hope it is not going to be 2K's Grand Theft Auto and instead sticks to what the game should be about and that is the Mafia. It does not need to be about Italy to be about the Mafia and as long as they make it a game about the MOB and not about being the next incarnation of RockStars GTA then it should be a good game, it will all depend on who writes the story.

Really disappointed with the latest trailer to be frank.

Felt the first bit of info released last year and gameplay was alright, Tho to be honest i had reservations on this character and where they were going to take the mafia Universe.

This latest trailer completely changed my thoughts and not for the good, this feels like Mafia : Shaft or Mafia : Black Dynamite edition.

I hope they were intending to pay hommage to Blaxplotation genre of film making because i felt the latest trailer was very over the top, All the physiques are grossly exaggerated, same with mannerisms. I Really hope this trailer is just the cream of the crop because i dont know how id take a 25/30 hour game of this kind of over the top crap constantly pushed into my face.

I am all for everyones story being told, I.E racial equality, Some of my favorite games contain black protagonists, I personally have a large interest in rap and hip hop and have for almost 2 decades now, So i really feel like i am not a racist individual.

something about this trailer rubbed me the wrong way, Mafia the series has always been a very classy and cool affair in my opinion, I feel latest version looses this allure, Very disappointed to say the least, Moved this game from a buy on launch to a buy when its %75 or more on sale.

IMO made up game a bout the mafia can make up any kind of story they want and its still a made up game about the mafia and i will play it...........i did not get stuck on "what happen to joe?" i played the game dude died or didnt die it dont matter to me lol.
Rod Serling Apr 19, 2016 @ 12:40pm
I understand you want a game eerily similar to Mafia I and/or II, but doing that will cause much more negative backlash, since people could just as easily play the older games that they already own.
Take Max Payne for example:
I honestly never saw Max Payne 3 being in New York yet again. Playing the same worlds over and over in very similar games gets boring, which is why a change of scenery is nevessary.
Sometimes sequels are not a good way to expand a game's universe, unless they're done properly and are not their prequels reskinned.

I got serious doubts about this game becoming somewhat epic, too. Mafia 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time, I loved the setting, the music, the characters.

While I don't expect Mafia 3 to become a genuine Mafia game at all, I still hope the developers will deliver a great story, another fresh setting and good controls.

It's like classic A-Team vs. the movie from 2010. If you decided to regard the movie as a part of the A-Team universe, it is complete garbage, actors are just ridiculously bad. But if you, on the other side, saw the movie as a solid action film (no comparisons at all!), it's quite entertaining.

I'snt this dude half italian or something? I'm under the impression where its like good fellas, where de niro wasnt full italian, so he couldn't join the mob but it was ok for him to work as a underling.

I'm assuming this dude was a underling who wasn't worthy enough so they tried to kill him and left him for dead. It's a case of revenge, cliche but will have some potential in this case.

it will add a verity of different mobs. italian, irish, white-american/african-american. etc...

The idea of him being mix also makes him very neutral and have free reign among the different gangs.

atheart, yes it seems a bit like GTA, but also it opens up for a lot of potential.

ITs a shame it looked more like a prequal to vice city stories set in new orleans than a mafia game
Tsoprano Apr 19, 2016 @ 1:17pm
Having hundreds of hours in both previous titles, yea doesn't quite seem like a Mafia title IMO. Most likely having dumbed down the driving, and the insta-crash explosions it feels like we are going farther and farther away from the authenticity and realism brought by the 1st in the series. And yes, Mafia 1 definetly had realism in mind when crafting a believeable set of physics and city scape. Of course time has passed, and visually it can't compete, but the gameplay was great.

Perhaps it doesn't have the 'feel' of the Mafia, i had thought Vegas would have been a great direction to take it, the NO city looks fantastic in the screens.

It does look like it will be a pretty good game either way, but how much of that Mafia attention to detail has crossed over, remains to be seen.
