Boxing mission. Can't attack, only defend?

So after the annoying bug of Alcee getting stuck outside which necessitated a reload, I go change, work the crowd, go in to the ring...and all I can do is defend (left alt). I can not actively attack this fool. Is that how the mission is supposed to play out? I've spent 20 minutes succesfully blocking every one of his hits and have counterattacked but that's it.

That must be yet another bug because I attacked with Q and that worked fine for me. Just defend when the Left Alt prompt comes up. Only takes about four hits each.
