Are wiretaps permanent?

Are wiretaps permanent or do they 'untap' after a while? Is it worth it to waste time wiretapping?

Some advice: Once you take over an area collect all the wiretap devices you locate. Most all wiretap junction boxes take three of the electronic items from your inventory. You'll find that in the long run you won't need to collect all of them off the map. I just collect as I go along trying to keep a reserve of about 30. Collecting all the electronic items on the map offers no advantage or reward.

There are actually only two reasons to wiretrap anything at all:

1. If you want to flip the racket bosses.
2. To find the magazines.

You missed #3.

3. Shows enemies on your map.

Also, it is impossible to collect all of them, because they tend to spawn from time to time. I was long gone with wiretapping and still had more and more of electronics laying here and there, I had like 50 of these and no more wiretapping to do.
