Low FPS on a high end PC
My config is: i7 6820HK overclocked at 4.1GHz, GTX 980M 8GB, 16GB of DDR5 Ram, 512GB SSD, 1TB HDD. I set the settings to the maximum and I'm getting only 45-46FPS and when I put my game on the lowest settings I can reach almost 54-58FPS. This is not normal with a high end PC like mine, Any solutions? Thanks

It is a laptop, and the 980m only has 4gb of memory, not 2, and is no where near as powerful as a desktop 980, so given that, your performance is about what I would expect, as your system is not high end anymore (neither is my system), what's really holding you back us the mobile side of things, especially the cpu, as between ai and gavpk physics the cpu takes a beating, and without really being able to overclock it or the gpu due to laptop limitations, you are at the best you will get.

Are you serious bro, my 980M have 8GB not 4GB and my 4K$ laptop is a low end PC? 😂 not sure about that my friend have a 970M 6GB with i7 6700 and he's running it at the max settings at ultra for sure... and look at all the gaming laptops, rare they are the ones with 6820HK, they all have a 6700 or under. Don't say me it's my laptop the problem I got an Alienware 15 R2 (almost 4500$ CAD)

Might be due to the fact you've ripped DDR5 modules off a GPU and put it into DDR3L slots ;p
But on a serious note, methinks you're running a laptop?
So a further guess would be it's a 980m sharing 8gb of system ram, so though performance is very close to a desktop GTX 980, it's still slightly worse. And perhaps check is your CPU/GPU aren't thermal throttling under full load... There was many a thread were people were suprised their rigs were getting hot under full load.

On a further note, set the FPS to unlimited in the options, found that the game likes to stop a few frames shy of the 60 mark, though with your verdict on how low vs max settings differ, I'd say this wasn't it. Currently the heaviest effects regarding FPS loss can be found in Reflections (though this one fares better with the latest patch), and Volumetric Lighting.

And for the record, this game seems to be one of the heaviest CPU bound games released in 2016, so the best desktop CPU combined with the best destop GPU is still only enough to brute force it. I'd take a guess you'd need at least a GTX 10 series laptop, with a regular i7 K to max it out.
So you say that my $4500 Alienware can't run this game? I'm not sure about that, at the lowest settings I get 56fps, which is impossible with a setup like that. Seriously ♥♥♥♥ PC, my $400 PS4 or One will just take the CD and run it correctly.

i take it back i have never come across an 8gb 980m before or a 6gb 970m (just looked it up), either way it doesn't change the fact that they are not as powerful as the desktop counterparts and are limited by the form factor regarding overclocking limits due to heat etc.

beyond my mistake of the vram, honestly, i have never seen an 8gb version before or even heard of one, every other point i made stands.

consoles struggle to hit 30fps on low settings, sorry if you have to be realistic about hardware limitations, but compared to a console your laptop is MILES ahead.

and again, you do not have a high end pc, you never have, you have what was at the time a very high end laptop, so i hope to god you didnt buy it recently (as in august / September onwards as if you did you got ripped off big time buying previous gen tech and i would ask for a refund and swap out to one with the far more powerful gtx1080, i only say this due to your small games library).

but with all that said, you are getting pretty much the fps i would expect you to be getting for the hardware, the game is crazy demanding especially on the cpu, and as with the gpu's laptop spec versions are very often slower than the desktop counterpart (though the latest 10 series seems to be damn close to the same finally).

you could try overclocking, but thats not really too advisable on a laptop due to already high heat generation due to the small form factor.

all this said, i forgot to check your screens res, but i am guessing it is 1080p, if its higher that fps is impressive, if its lower its a problem.

So if I want to play games on a laptop I have to pay 5000$ lol
no, thats not what i said, you need to understand limitations, you can clearly play one of the most demanding games for sale at a decent respectable fps, but , if you wan tto go faster, you are better off with a desktop for alot less cash ... ok less cash is debatable depending on peripherals etc, seeing as i am sitting here with a £170 keyboard £140 mouse and when i got it a near £700 monitor which admittedly closes the gap to the price of a laptop ALOT, though with more regular parts the cost is a hell of alot less, but as you bought a laptop i guess you actually do move around alot and dont have it sitting in 1 place all the time so this argument is mute, unless you dont move around alot that is .. in which case HA HA.

Just look at this bro, everyone else can run this game without problems, and he's at 1440p, i'm at 1080p: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWfPkY6VMw0

7 of my 8 cores wasn't working, I hope that's the problem
linking a random video means nothing (especially one thats struggling to get 30fps at a NOT 1440p but a 21:9 2560x1080p) , i tried to advise you that you basically dont have a damn problem, the fact that someone else is running the game worse than you and you choose to link it is just confusing, what exactly are you angry or confused about ? you are getting pretty much the fps and performance i would expect you to be getting.

but hey as its random vid time here is my video showing how the game is running on a desktop thats costs less than your laptop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwoBG4aQZSQ but for the sake of the comparison is similar spec, as mafia 3 doesn't really make use of sli, just to show the differences between the laptop and desktop versions of hardware.

I activated all my cores and now I'm getting 25fps and anyways it's sure that I have a certain ''damn'' problem with my laptop because I have massive fps drops sometimes in American Truck Simulator, and don't say me that my 4500$ laptop can't handle ATS hahaha
Naposledy upravil QCTGAMING; 13. lis. 2016 v 9.12
what exactly do you mean you activated all your cores ? also if your fps has dropped that much you may of accidentally switched to be using the on-board graphics instead of the dedicated 980m, but again, your laptop is getting about what i would expect so i dont know what you expect exactly, if theres any serious issues , you could try making a recording using shadowplay and uploading it, or installing msi afterburner to monitor what your system is doing while its running via the overlay (the pink one in my video), as for any tweaks, as before the patch turning down reflections can result in a nice little fps gain.

beyond that it is a simple case of understanding your hardware's limitations.

It's simple to play no hint of optimization. You can forget about the game.

I contacted Alienware support and they said to me that my laptop can run everything at ultra 60fps. I sent it back to the repairation place 2 times and it was always the same story. They decided to send me a brand new one and I'm waiting about it. I'm sure that I will be alright after.
there has just been a huge patch that has boosted peoples fps by 10-20fps, thats quite a bit of optimisation of a demanding game.
then they blatantly lied, as they cannot know that for a fact, that laptop, will struggle to hit a constant 60fps at max settings in mafia 3, it will get close, as you already are, but its simply a limitation of the hardware and form factor, end of the day its an overpriced dell laptop, its doing well and is just suffering like ALOT of desktops in one of the most demanding games released.
