I am not dissapointed - I love the game and as its early access - I'm sure you manage the problems to include casual keyboard couch co-op until lauch. I just wait and me and my boy play single player mode until then :)
Hey there Whispershades!
Actually it's been misunderstanding here. 2 Players on one keyboard with all the inputs we have is technically not possible (or at least is something we didn't implement since it comes with a lot of technical difficulties).
I am glad you still like our singleplayer tho, BUT I strongly recommend you getting a controller if you want to play together with your son!
Personally I would recommend you the XBOX 360 controller for Windows[www.amazon.de] but there's other, less expensive options[www.amazon.de], too!
I hope this is an option for you that you might consider!
Other than that, thank you for your kind review and your support in the developpment of the game. I love to hear that kids can play the game too :)
Haha, yes indeed. Check out this: http://www.klonk-games.de/games/mercury-shift/) (we did this during our studies, it's the reasons Shift Happens got made)
Hi Claudia!
Unfortunately we use the Unity 3D Engine for the development of Shift Happens and the engine doesn't support having two different keyboards on one game.
I have also never heard of some1 playing a game locally with TWO keyboards on ONE pc. Did you play other games like that? If so, could you name them so I could check them out, just out of curiousity.
Other than that, I can imagine you could emulate something like that. There is for example a program called XPADDER that emulates Keyboard Inputs for a controller. In your case maybe theres a program that does it the other way around, emulating inputs from a controller on a second keyboard. So to speak, the game still thinks you are giving inputs with a controller but you are using a second keyboard.
I will look into it and tell you if I find anything.
Anyways, I hope you'll still have fun with the game and can enjoy it, even if it's not with 2 keyboards!
EDIT:
I just googled it and found this: http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=vjoy
This does exactly what I described to you, so you can try it with that!
You need to setup up the controls in VJoy for the 2nd player so that the program "thinks" you are giving gamepad inputs. I am not sure tho how it works with blocking controls.
Because both keyboards always send the same signals meaning, if Player 1 has jump on "Space" , the 2nd player will probably always be able to make the 1st player jump too by pressing space since it will be recognized as the same signal.
However, try it out. Good Luck :)
Still a great game.
I am sorry to hear that honestly. Not that you are not willing to buy a contorller just for our game (which I can totally understand) but the fact that you can't enjoy it like you would want to.
However, I can tell you it's not a fault on our side for "not implementing" it because it's hardware related. Or at least, if we would allow two keyboards it would not assure that it works for everyone just fine. First, check out the following link for further understanding:
https://www.microsoft.com/appliedsciences/content/projects/KeyboardGhostingDemo.aspx
Click on the keyboard where it says "Click to use", then type as many keys as possible at the same time. It highlights all the keys that are being pressed simultaneously. Now the interesting part is this:
How To Hunt For Ghosts
Ghosts can be somewhat elusive. Just because you find some combination of 6 keys that reports correctly does not necessarily mean that every combination of 6 works. In fact, the most straightforward keyboard design has thousands of 3-key combinations that do not work! That is a lot, but it is still less than 5% of the total number of 3-key combinations.
A quick way to find problematic combinations is to press and hold ASDW (the most popular keys for moving around in games), and then while holding those down, press every other key in turn. If you find a key that does not work, try releasing some of the ASDW keys. Odds are high that you will find a 3-key combination that fails.
If you have an application that uses other combinations of keys, be sure to try those too!
This essentially means that if you press 6 keys simultaneously, pressing 1 more isn't recognized by your keyboard. However, not EVERY 6 key combination is bound to even work and there might be combinations where not even 4 or 3 keys work at the same time.
So this means that if you play Shift Happens you probably constantly press 1 direction button which is 2 keys for two players already. Mix in this + shift button would add up to 3 (or 4 if both press it at the same time).
Now, our game often requires key combinations that are pressed simjulatenously very fast, like walk right + jump + hold left + throw and shift. And this is only for ONE player. Now imagine you have two players doing this. This will result in a lot of issues with ghosting keys and hence would make it seem like the game is simply very bad. Which would also lead to very bad review or angry players. And we wanted to avoid that.
The TL;DR answer would be:
Shift Happens requires often times (not always) a great number of simultaneously pressed key combination of two players. They ghosting issue with keyboards makes it so that it would be a very specific problem for many people where different key combinations would or could not work and we couldn't solve this for any1 basically. That's why we recommend playing with a controller.
I hope this makes sense to you. I also would be interested in the games that you played together on one keyboard. Simply because I wanna test it myself out of curiousity. Because, never say never.
However, I think nowadays, investing money in 1 controller is not that bad, if you like playing platformers on steam. Aaand you might be able to enjoy the game at it's highest strength: the multiplayer :)
Nope, you just need at least 1 controller and 1 keyboard, or 2 controllers :)
XBOX one or XBOX 360 are recommended, others work too,
None of my friends live near me so that is not an option, so yeah online co-op is essential because there are way more people in online gaming communities with friends far away from them than there are close to them, or siblings who play the same games or w/e.
Glad to know it's getting online, will likely pick it up if one of my friends wants to play.
You have literally no idea how grateful I am that you understand, apparently the guys who made overcooked do not. >_>
My 3 best friends live in california, texas, and minnisota, I live in west virginia. Try looking up where that is on the US map, we are hours away from each other and lack the means to meet up in person. I met them all either in online games or forums so none of them have ever lived near me.
Not trying to bash people who play on the couch or anything, I don't think there's anything wrong with it, it just isn't a possibility for everyone, whereas online usually is.
Just like RazieLight said, its not our fault people out there actually have friends to play this with.
