If you're familiar with Valorant, where some operators do gather intel, some do make space and enter the site as the first ones, and some do cover the entry points and off-angles to make it easier for the team to move-in, you can apply the same strategy here.
Some do have their kit built around initiating, highlighting enemies and giving their locations (Valkyrie, Aruni, Dokkaebi, ...), so do set up the place (Hibana, Kapkan, Mira, ...), and some do simply enter the site (Sledge, Blackbeard, Zofia, Ash, Montagne, Caveira, Vigil, ...).
By selecting the operator who helps your team the most, you're literally ensuring that you'll win the match.
Honest answer would be to just have a 5 character preference list
I spent nearly 600 hours in this game. And yet I still cant orientate well in the maps and still dont know which operators are best suited for which situations. Therefore the time limit for picking is just too short for me sometimes. And auto-picking is really hurting my gameplay. I might pick up some healer or simple general support as default so if i dont pick, i can at least help the team.
What I hate the most is when I pick a character and see my team mates picking operators who're not suitable with the one that I've picked.
Say, they do pick Thermite and Hibana, I pick Maverick.. But, how about Jackal to hunt Caveira and Vigil down? How about some long-distance support, like Kali or Dokkaebi? How about Thatcher to deal with Bandit's and Kaid's gadgets?
See, it's already quite difficult, and it becomes even more difficult when certain operators get banned. Literally nothing hurts me the most than that, unless I were to include silly reasons like the desire to play with EBR, Type, and other heavy hitting rifles.. Which is, indeed, silly, as all you need is a ~1mm pistol and hit their head just once. Nothin' else.
If you can't orientate in maps properly, I'd suggest trying out some Terrorist Hunts, renamed to Training Grounds in the „recent“ updates.
Although bombs may have slightly different locations from hostages, it shall be more or less the same.
If you're unsure, just scout the area with a drone.
I can partly relate to losing orientation in space because the maps were different back in the day when I've been playing Rainbow.. And they've been all reworked, all those HD textures.. You know, modern trend of the developers..
House's rework was the most impactful one, I do still feel kinda lost there. To miss an angle by one or two rooms can result in making a critical mistake, exposing myself to enemies.. That sort of stuff.
If you wanna play more of a support, you can never go wrong with Valkyrie, Mozzie, Mute, Doc (for that, you will have to go outta your way, approach them, and heal them), Aruni, Alibi, Echo, Jäger - Osa, Iana, Nomad, Finka, Lion, Dokkaebi, Hibana, Thatcher, IQ, and Fuze.
There may be some more that I've missed, but you do pretty much have a choice to choose between over five agents, so you're always having an option to play as a support.
Not all of them are, of course, as supportive as some like Dokkaebi, Finka, Lion, and such ones, who can support the entire team at the same time.
I spotted this thread and noticed that you mentioned that the auto pick selection was not working as intended.
I couldn't find an open investigation into this issue with the Siege team, but if the auto pick selection is broken in any way, please could you give us some more details as to why you think this is not working correctly in-game? Thank you

The auto-pick system should always picks the operator I played a lot.
This season I picked a lot Twitch and Jager at first. (It works well then)
But recently my top-pick operators are Ace and Alibi.
The auto-pick system still picks Twitch and Jager for me.
So I think it is broken.
But I can't remember since when.
And the official r6 stats is broken too.
I wonder if they are related.
Hey,
I'll let the dev team know so they can look into this. I'm surprised we're not seeing more reports of it though if that's a feature that has broken.

Thanks. Maybe it might really help to develop the option to set the default auto-pick operator as discussed above.
I am just revisiting this to say I had confirmation that the auto-pick operator selects your most used operator, not by season or year but by overall playtime since you began playing the game.
The only website we have control of for stats is our own website here, we are unable to advise on the accuracy of other 3rd party websites you may use in case they are out of sync > https://www.ubisoft.com/en-gb/game/rainbow-six/siege/stats/summary/d1f954ea-a6d1-4efc-94ea-d9269ea7eb71
If you think your operator auto-pick is incorrect, please keep letting us know. It might be best for you to contact us over on of our support links, as we can usually check your in-game stats stored on our server to compare >

As I mentioned. This solution is suboptimal. Please develop a setting to choose a default operator.
Hey Fringeart,
We're more than happy to pass this on as feedback for the team to consider.
If there is anything more we can answer, please let us know!
