get a friend and get into a custom game and have him run around while you mess with your EQ
EQing footsteps is tricky in this game, when someone is above you footsteps are more bassy, when someone is on your floor it has more of a mid-high end, then below you its trebley
In addition to how humans perceive sound, the way a single person will perceive a sound can change day by day--albeit minutely most of the time. For example: whenever I stay up till like 5 AM and then wake up in two hours for an 8 AM class, my ability to hear treble frequencies gets destroyed until I catch up on sleep again. So on top of your own ability to hear sound varying based on the fact that your genes are unique and that not all headphones and DACs are created equal, you couldn't even just rely on merely one EQ curve; you'd need multiple for various setups. Also, you'd literally have to modify in-game files to make footsteps louder, and that counts as cheating...
Or you could as you said...but
there's a bunch of downsides to using night mode--way more downsides imho than Hi-Fi:- Despite that footsteps will sound much louder and breach charges much quieter, that same effect on volume of sounds applies to distances...which means you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between something one room over vs. literally right next to you. (Obviously, I would still look...but that will definitively affect your performance negatively, even if only subtly.)
- Playing this game isn't very immersive if you play on Night Mode, because explosions are pretty much just as loud as footsteps. Also, flashbangs don't really sound loud enough to actually deafen you...which may naturally lead to some raging because "this game isn't realistic!" (despite that you could literally make it more realistic by setting your audio to Hi-Fi).
- If you keep your audio in Night Mode, you won't be able to detect quieter sounds in other games that don't have the option as easily because you won't be used to "keeping your ears peeled" as I like to say (i.e. being alert).
- Based on personal experience, I'd also like to say that having Hi-Fi mode on has made me able to locate sounds with exceptional accuracy and precision. It's also made music 10x more enjoyable to listen to lol.
But anyhow, do what you want; try to experiment with things. If you can't buy good headphones and a good DAC/amp combo, then I'll just give you a blind suggestion (because you didn't say which sound card and headset you've got): and that would be to lower your mids (from like 600Hz until maybe 1800Hz) by at least 3 decibels, because most headphones have an inherent mid-boost that makes listening to anything (especially music) nauseating after only a little bit of time. So, in conclusion: the thing that will help you the most is getting yourself a setup that evens out the frequencies across the spectrum so that you can listen/play for as long as you want. I could even recommend you some really good options that would do the trick; if you'd like that, just add and DM me!
