And it was just as ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as it was before and that was one of the things they needed to fix with the old ranking system
If you played with a friend who was 2+ rank brackets above you (gold w/ bronze or platinum w/ silver), it would make the teams so unbelievably screwed up because of that. Since it went off of an "average team rating", it had to make an enemy team that was equally screwed up with resulted in matches with copper/silver/gold/plat/diamond players playing against each other
You're right, the champion player has absolutely no advantage over the bronze/silver players and is just as equal as they are, and I've never heard more beautiful logic in my life
If rank gives no advantage, then why do ranks exist if everyone is equal?
People with previous champ will face people with around the same rank. Hidden rank stays the same, visible rank resets
Dota 2 has that exact same system and it's called "rank confidence" which causes your hidden MMR to decrease over time to account for long breaks. With this system, it removes your rank if your rank confidence goes below a certain value and requires you to recalibrate if too much time has passed to make sure you still belong in the rank you were in previously or if you need to go down in rank
If low rank gameplay is getting 1-tapped every time you peek around a corner or having an opponent being able to quick peek 1-tap people with ease, then I don't see ranked being playable anymore
It most likely has to do with player retention by artificially making the rank up process slower. With the old system, you could play 10 games and get put into gold rank which, at the time, was the above average rank bracket below platinum and diamond. Now, since you start at copper, you have to work your way up through copper, bronze, and silver just to get to the lowest gold rank. This is also assuming you win every game which isn't very likely, so you end up having a lower rank than you would've with the old 10-match calibration system
