Smurfing isn't an issue anymore because even with me and my friends being Copper and Bronze with the occasional Silver - Gold we still are getting matched against Emeralds and even Champs which is insane to do.
The new system rewards you on how much you play rather than how good you are. If you just play a crap ton of Ranked everyday for the entire season you will hit a high rank but that does depend on where your plateau is. Mine for some reason is Bronze 2 and then I start gaining 37RP and losing 27RP.
New system is trash and needs to be fixed but its whatever
Suppose you were always a diamond vs. one season you didn't have time to play and ended it on a copper? Then next time the system won't let you take higher copper?
I also often notice that I have one game against professionals and another against newbies.
I think it's based on your hidden MMR too also. By hidden MMR I mean the rank that is shown doesn't matter anymore but in the background you can be a Plat 3 in matchmaking MMR and be a Copper 1 in the shown Ranked MMR (the Icon that symbolizes your current season rank). My highest rank on PC was Silver 4 which was about 2200 MMR or around there. (2200 MMR is Silver 3 now with the RP system)
To answer your question: I am assuming based off what I achieved before; it goes for your HIGHEST rank you have ever achieved in Ranked regardless of if it was MMR or RP based. If you hit Champ before you'll hit Emerald 5+ before you'll start capping in RP gain (Meaning you lose about as much as you gain).
To back that up I have asked friends and even documented their R6 stats via R6Tracker and it all checks out even for all of them. They were getting upwards of 150+ RP a win and were shooting through Copper - Gold and then in Plat were still gaining 120ish maybe even 100 and then when they hit Emerald they fizzled out and were gaining around 60-70 RP a win and then Diamond they were getting 30-40ish a win. The loss of RP is just below the amount they gain so it varies.
I hoped that there would be a rank system, like in CS - where everything is clear and stable.
My cousin played on gold-platinum, but they began to be removed more than they were given on silver. But she didnt play one season.
