Buying Rainbox Six: Siege - Uplay vs Steam
What are the major differences between buying Siege Uplay vs on Steam? I was wondering myself and noticed others were too. I also discovered an interesting tax discrepancy...

Please join the discussion if you think I missed something:

Uplay - CONs
  1. Only Uplay achievements.
  2. Uplay charges tax (Canada)
  3. You can't buy the Season Pass on Steam if bought on Uplay, but you can buy the Season Pass through Uplay or Steam if bought via Steam. (Kudos to DaRkStAr for this one)
Uplay - PROs
  1. Single game launcher
  2. Buying via Uplay gives bonus Uplay Units. 20 for Starter Ed., 60 for Regular Ed.
Can be redeemed at Ubisoft Club - Shop Rewards, mostly for discounts. (see link below)

Steam CONs
  1. Only Uplay achievements.
  2. Two launchers required to play (oldschool performance optimization habit)
Steam PROs
  1. No tax (Canada)
  2. You can add the game manually to Steam (if purchased from Uplay)
  3. You can buy the Season Pass through Uplay or Steam if bought via Steam.

Common PROs
  1. Both accepts PayPal.
  2. Payment in local currency
  3. Steam friends can be synced by linking Steam & Uplay (see Ubi's FAQ link below)

Conclusions
-I'll be buying it on Steam. :D

I discover the tax thing while researching the differences and comparing checkouts on both platforms...

steam launches game from uplay, so there isn't a big difference.

there is no difference if you buy it on either apart from tax and units

"No difference?" So if I buy on Steam the game will show up in my Uplay Games and achievements will be shared across both platform?

Hum, no? I just checked my Uplay acccount management page and only consoles (PSN and XBOX Live) and Facebook accounts can be linked... Care to explain how? Thank you!

EDIT: I found out how, but it requires to start the game from Steam first, then it prompts you to link it. That explains why it can't be done via Uplay's account management page. lol

Actually you just go to the "add friends" option and there's a button saying "import friends from steam".

Although I think the steps you described were to sync your Uplay and Steam accounts in general, not just the friends list. I don't specifically remember that process since the first Uplay game I bought through steam was over 3 years ago.

I tried via a web browser and the Uplay desktop app: I don't have that option.

Yes
I checked your games page: it doesn't show any achievements for Siege and it gives an error message when it tries to load them lol I Believe you, but I'd like to see it work.

Uplay - CONs
Separates Achievements (Uplay separate from Steam) (there is only uplay achievements whether you play through steam or uplay)

Uplay - PROs
Single game launcher(I only click 1 button to launch the game on steam)
Uplay required to play; friends will play together anyway, whatever the platform preferences.(Not a pro or a con)
Buying via Uplay gives bonus Uplay Units. 20 for Starter Ed., 60 for Regular Ed.(I don't give 2 shts about uplay points)

Steam CONs
Separates Achievements (Uplay separate from Steam) (Wrong.)
Two launchers required to play(You're not wrong but it's not a con)

You forgot to add a con for Uplay though. You can't buy the Season Pass on Steam if you bought it on Uplay, But you can buy the Season Pass through Uplay/Steam if you have it on Steam

Added conclusion :D

GLHF!
really not related but i want to inquiry, i been banned from siege on uplay(got it for 20$ g2a) and i have it on uplay but i wanna buy it again but this time on steam would i be able to play it and not having it say YOU BANNED BRUH!

You need a Uplay account to play as it's your Uplay account that "plays" the game, not the platform on which it's published/purchased. Indeed, you'll need a new Uplay account to play.

Btw, I've been playing online multiplayer games for more than two decades and I have never ever been banned from any games... Congrats on accomplishing such a feat. lol

You can just launch R6's UPlay version with "Add Non-Steam Program" if you want the overlay.
