To Ubi's credit, said changes also included removing the renown cost of weapon attachments (e.g. grips sights etc) and just unlocking them all for everyone, so I'd be willing to bet that putting the Pathfinders behind a small unlock barrier is more to help new players not get overwhelmed from having so many op choices so suddenly, rather than some sort of effort to increase grind.
Game is released, have to unlock base ops
They add the starter edition, they make all base ops unlocked when buying base game
They remove the starter edition, they go back to standard unlock mode for base game ops + cut in price of base game
Worth clarifying for the middle bit that you still had to unlock the base ops if you got Starter instead of Standard (Standard being the "base" editon) during that time period.
