What headphones should I get?
Wanted to get a new pair of high quality audio cans to use for most of the time gaming, a bit of music, and YouTube watching. I know that open back and even semi-open back are far superior, however I can't have them due to reasons I would not like to explain. I've narrowed my search down to the DT 770 80 Ohms version and the Audio-Technica M40X's. I've listened to both on an audio comparison website (https://soundcloud.com/sonic-sense-pro-audio) where they have all the headphones available to listen to, and I definitely enjoyed the sound of the M40X's more for a music perspective. I also currently have a pair of Sennheiser HD598 Cs headphones. However, how do these headphones do with positional audio? I've heard they have a much more narrow soundstage but will that be a detriment to me while playing games that use such audio type? Should I change up from the HD 598 Cs's and go with one of the options I've listed, or should I stick with the ones I have right now? Also, in games is the audio quality comparable to that of listening to music? Like will it sound as good as it does in games as it does music?

Sorry for the long post here, just want some answers on this because I'm not as sure as I want to be yet on this. Thanks in advance for any answers!

EDIT: The link will give an error, so just highlight it and use "Search with google" to look at the website.

The DT770's are the industry standard for pro audio. They sound and feel amazing, go for it! You won't be disappointed.

Thank you! I've been looking more into these headsets and I've seen that the DT's seem to have a much better soundstage plus great audio. Only thing I wanted to ask is that do they need an AMP and a DAC to drive? I was gonna use my main PC which has the H-170 PRO Motherboard in it, and I'm not sure if it will be good audio quality or using the AMP/DAC would make it better.

Thanks in advance for your response! :steamhappy:

You're welcome, and nope! The 80 ohm version does not need an amp and can be powered by all your day to day devices. Though I must add that they will drain your phone's battery faster than any 'regular' pair.

Enjoy the mindblowing difference between pro audio and 'gaming' quality!

I dont think you need professional headphones, to play a freaking videogame, only you should spend that much on headphones if you are in music industry

The Audio Technica M50Xs are probably your best bet.

Personally, I'd recommend the Sony MDR-7506. I have a pair from 1994 that still work, and you can still buy them new today.
Keep in mind, they are very flat sounding, so there is going to be almost no bass to them, but if sound clarity is what you want, they're perfect for the price.

For gaming I'd suggest getting Arctis 7 or something, it has a SteelSeries Engine software which allows you to EQ the sound you are hearing.
You see, in R6S you have to listen a lot.
With SSEngine you could cut the high frequencies (to cut down shooting and explosion effects) and add more bottom end to hear footsteps.
Because sometimes when you need to hear footsteps you crank up the volume, and when you do so - if you shoot or someone tosses a grenade - your eardrums almost get destroyed.

I also agree with DT770's, studio ones are actually pretty good.
The only thing is - studio monitors or studio headsets are flat sounding meaning you hear sound just as it was meant to be heard WITHOUT any BASS boost like lots of nowadays gaming headsets.

Sony headphones are absolutly top notch quality, i have since 2012 using daily, and never had any problem since, i accidently ripped cable many times and still nothing, so i highly recommend sony for quality,i only replaced cusions once, but works like new

Well.. pruducts with SSE (SteelSeries Engine) might fit your needs since you have a 5-7 band EQ option in there with presets.
Boost or cut frequencies as you like.

Amazon:
SteelSeries Siberia 650 Gaming Headset - 130-150 US dollars (SSE)
Arctis 7 - 100-110 US dollars (SSE)
DT770 - 160-180 US dollars (no SSE support. studio ones are flat sounding)

Also see if there is a 7.1 surround sound.

If you're going to use them for other things besides gaming I'd still suggest the 7506s. They are production headphones, so you'll notice a lot more things that you wouldn't hear with normal headphones.

Guys, I've seen the DT 770s and I think ive decided to get those. However, what DAC and AMP should I get or at least a DAC? I know people say the quality improves vastly with these but I wanna know which ones best. Thanks in advance! :steamhappy:

These headphones these guys suggesting doesn't come with a microphone so..... Its better to buy a modmic 4.0/5.0/wireless for $50. It delivers excellent sound even for podcasters. But if you just want to get the best quality sound get senheisser, audio technica, and others which are really good choices. Well if you don't really have the money a gaming headphone will suite you good. Just make sure to buy a good comfortable one like my Razer Kraken Pro V2 which has acclaimed bs "crystal clear" mic.

I have dt770's 80 ohm (for straight cable) the 250 ohm has a coil cable which sucks ass at desktop.

Also have a akg712 pro, I use fiio e10k dac/amp to power both of them. It's a decent entry/budget dac and amp in one - cost me 90€.

An upgrade would be a schiit stack if you're located in USA I suppose. If this is the case an alternative to fiio e10k for almost same price could be schitt fulla 2.

I am no audio expert, but the fiio e10k despite being entry/budget level for an amp/dac seems sufficient to power both my headphones. The sound is better than any garbage gaming headset you could possibly buy.

Them not having a mic is a non issue, just use a mic arm + mic or put a mic in front/behind your keyboard. I just have a simple samson meteor mic in front my keyboard whenever I need to use voice in competitive gaming. Doesn't really pick up any sounds, only my voice

Also closed back headphone will always have worse sounstage, but dt770 despite being closed have a very good stage. Still not as good as open headphones, but its one of the best soundstages for a closed headphone. If anything I find closed earphones actually more immersive despite less soundstage, due to the fact that you cant hear your surroundings. With my open back akg712's i can hear people downstairs and every sound, so despite a fuller and bigger soundstage, i find them less immersive.

I do agree on you. RGB doesn't make your game good. Avoid 7.1 surround sound headsets as they're not that good for gaming. Just use a modmic and a good headset. Though there are some "gaming headset" that are great for their quality. Try the Razer Kraken Pro V2, its really comfortable. Good build quality, decent sound, "bad" mic, comfortable ear cushions. I would prefer the senhheiser headphones or even their really good gaming headsets but I don't really have a big budget.
