6 siege = Arcade or strategy/tactical ?
[sorry for my english]

[TL ; DR --> the game is mostly arcade-action, but it can in some ways become sometimes strategic when you are teamworking and when you're doing ranking matches]

I think games are not generally just one genre, like exemple only arcade or only strategic. It's even more true today, because games are becoming more and more complex over time, mixing genre.

Games are more a spectrum I would say, like this (in the case of siege) :

arcade <------------------------------ balanced ----------------------------> strategic

But still, we usually associate games to a genre to have a better idea of it, by associating the game to the dominating genre in its gameplay.

In the case of Siege, it is I think more in the arcade genre and I will write here down why I think so.

arcade <---------------6/SIEGE---------balanced-----------------------------> strategic

If I would use percentage, I would say that Siege is about maybe 80 % arcade and 20 % strategic/tactical. At least, around this.

Why it is so especially arcade ?

If we search on the internet, an arcade game is mostly these :

- fast-paced action game (you need to be fast)
- requiring hand-eye coordination skill to play (you need skills with the controller)
- very instinctive and simple gameplay that can be learn quickly (but it do not mean you're gonna be good, it only mean you will learn quickly the controls)
- A system of ranking and leveling that considerably increase the difficulty as you play through the game.

But even the term ''arcade'' is a bit complicated, because it is use also to refer to the coin-operated machine (pacman, etc.). These old game are normally endless and made to be addictive. This is why at this point it is more specific to use the term ''Arcade and Action'' genre. ''Action'' because the challenge in the gameplay is very physical, which mean that you need to have very good reflexes because the gameplay depends on reaction-time. ''Action'' because the game is very explosive and stressful too. The term ''action'' speak by itself.

These are exemples and ''arcade'' or ''action'' genre can mean a lot more, like :

- large amount of things in the HUD and status bar. You are constantly bombarded of cautions and notices, the screen is full of text and forms. You'll sea a lot of informations.
- great potential of competition (the importance of the scores you make)
- music in background, specially very loud ones.
etc.

So, when it come to Siege, do these ''arcade and action features'' match the game ?

Yes it does.

- the game is fast-paced, a round on rank is only 3 minutes ! Normally, a match is around 4 rounds. It is very fast sometimes (even faster on higher rank I think).
- Coordination is very important. You need skills !
- The controls are very simple and intuitive, like most of FPS games.
- There is a ranking system, making the progression in the game more and more difficult when you're facing stronger enemy.
- The game, in some way, is addictive. You must play a lot to enjoy it, by developing map knowledge, to deblocking new operator, etc. You must play a lot to be very good ! You finish a match ? Ahh... Just another one !
- The HUD is full of notices ! You almost know everything ; you're magazine, you're health, where are your teammates, where's the objectives (once you have spotted them with drone first), where the defuser as been put, etc. A voice is calling everything to remind you things.
- A LOT OF COMPETITION.

And this is why the game is mostly in the arcade (and action) genre.

But the strategic genre is not forsaken (but it is clearly neglected).

The variety of the operators, the size and complexity of the maps, the destructibles obstacles and walls/floors/roofs, all of these exemples can generate strategic situations. The fact that you can use a drone or camera to scout, the fact that you can use terrain and some items or tools, make the game a bit tactical.

And that's when it becomes interesting.

When you play to this game in a team, ideally full squad, and that all the teammates have microphone, then it become more tactical because of the communication. This kind of gameplay then generate a lot of possibility that can overcome the skills of the players individually.

When you're playing in ranked matches, the game generally match you with players of the same rank of you (copper, bronze, gold, etc.). Not always, but in general you play with and against people that have similar skills to you. In this case, if you find a match in which the skills are equals, the strategic side of the game is ''turned on''. Now you can use the full advantages of your operators with your teammates and play tactical with communication.

But at the end, when you face the enemy, the skills are the last thing to make you really win (after all, after scouting, breaching and communicating, which are strategic aspects, what make you win or loose is your skills to kill with your weapon mostly). And this is why the arcade genre still is the dominating genre of this game. Because no matter how strategic you are, if you're facing a enemy with better skills and reflexes than you, you're doomed. This is why the fact that you must play with similar rank players and a squad of friends is important to make the strategic aspect to carry on.

Beside that, some operators do have ''counter operators'' which seems to add strategical traits, but again when an operator is facing his counter only the skills really matter at this point. And this is why you need so much communication and scouting to really enjoy the strategic aspect. This mean that the more you get into the game, the more the strategic income appear too because you know the map and the operators more and more.

Finally, the fact that the game is full of microtransactions and extravagant cosmetics, that you're facing off a lot of ''trolls'' and ''teabaging kids'', are always things that remind us of a more arcadish game. But, fortunately, these toxic things will often disappear while your rank go up (higher rank mean better attitude).

Thanks for reading.
