sound comes from the closest source. if you are on the 2nd floor and someone is right under you, you probably not gonna hear him, but if the hatchet is open - you will. and in that case its may confuse you, because if the hatchet is opened and there's a corridor in the same direction - then you might mishear if sound comes from under you, or that corridor. about stairs - if you are sitting in between 2 floors on the stairs you might misunderstand where the sound comes from, because there're a lot of sources, such as open windows, open doors, balconies etc, so you have to listen really carefully where the sounds come from. ofc you need a good headset for that as well.
if you live in a flat, not in a house, then you must've noticed sometimes that you hear steps in your flat, but in reality its your neighbours from above. thats just the way how sound works x)
I changed some of my sounds settings, and had the W10 creator's update. After that I have been surprised too by windows being broken on the following rooms and not able to hear it. It never happened like that before, and recently I experienced it 5-6 times already, and the sound seems... Well... Odd now.
Last W10 update brought some changes in the sound settings I think (well, I never saw the "spatial sound" option, or whatever it's called in english, before, for exemple), so I'm wondering.
It could still be my own changes in my settings (randomly tested because I couldn't hear anything from it anymore, because I'm stupid and forgot to unplug my earphones), but I doubt it totally comes from that. I mean, Okay, my sounds seems odd now, and that probably comes from that. But sounds NOT being displayed it strange.
My setup include a sound card, an old Audigy X-FI Music, or something like that, and a 5.1 system, it it can helps.
