- more playtime
- more in depth story and character development
- more game modes
- health carried on in each mode
- focused on zelda style battle

Evoland 2 by a long shot. I played it before playing Evoland and it was kind of hard to get into Evoland as it had a lot to live up to and I feel E2 handled the different gaming eras in a much better way. In Evoland, you basically run through chest after chest continuously unlocking graphical/technical upgrades so quickly that you never really get a feel for any specific gaming generation, E2 fixed that entirely. Evoland was a good idea, but didn't at all give me a sense of gaming nostalgia. E2, however brought me back to many hours spent playing zelda, mario, chrono trigger, ffVI, FF:tactics, street fighter and many, many more all while being incredibly original and unique.
Evoland 2 because it has a very immersive plot, a beautiful soundtrack (as beautiful as the Wii U version of Wind Waker's soundtrack, if not more), and great character development!

I wrote a post about that a while ago:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/359310/discussions/0/348293292499824971/#c348293292501026361
The gist is:
Evoland 1 had a nice concept, but didn't know what it was doing and ended up as an incohesive mashup of two unrelated parts, and quite boring overall.

Evoland 2 thankfully fixed that; with a consistent health system in place, they had a decent base gameplay; all of the gameplay styles they added (some good, some not) had enough connections to the base gameplay to make it feel like a more cohesive game overall.
The problem is that Evoland 2 still doesn't develop most of them.
Yes, there is more focus on traveling through different eras than Evoland 1; yes, the FE-style campaign is awesome and feels like a complete minigame with its own arc.
But that's pretty much it. All of the rest (including the story) are at best just prototypes of what could be a much better game (or story). We're playing a game full of prototypes of possible better games, instead of playing those games.

For what it's worth, though, Evoland 2 kept me engaged up to the ending, 100% completion, and all the way through what I've replayed so far. Developers are improving.

But you also miss the point of the game. It is to show an evolution of RPGs, hence why you start out in a monochrome world and progress into other areas of improvement through several RPG types.

It relies a fair amount on nostalgia so you have to understand the references and visual diffrences to get the full effect from the game.

First one was good and fun. Just started on the second so can't say too much as I only just got the sword...the joke about the well (a reference to the first game) had me smiling.

Evolution of RPGs or not, Evoland 1 becomes incredibly boring after it turns 3d, it stops introducing anything meaningful or even just interesting to the gameplay, and doesn't even expand on what it has, with the exception of one area.
(Unless you're trying to say that the increasing staleness and dullness is a part of RPG history too).

And once again, evolution of RPGs or not, Evoland 2 is still a much more interesting game than 1 for the whole time. It just fails at being a *really* cohesive whole and its (several) different parts are very hit or miss.

I understand your point, but you did miss the bigger picture in it.

I had fun all the way through. Sorry you did not. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on such matter though.

So far not having any such issues with Evoland 2 either. Everything is working together just fine, as long as you look at the overall picture and reasons for it being the way it is.

What bigger picture?
It's representing the evoluion of RPGs created by gradually adding graphic improvements and better movement, it has FF-like overworld and battles, Zelda-like dungeons (with a health system completely unrelated from the overworld health system) and a throwaway hack'n'slash section. There are no sections representing dynamic battles in Chrono Trigger style, FE-style tactics or Mystery Dungeon type of zones.
There is exactly one area where going back and forth between 2d and 3d is used for puzzles.
And after you get 3d (and "hd" textures), the game simply stops adding new features (except removing an arbitrary load time that isn't present anywhere else) and fails to build on the ones it has, which makes the latter half of the game incredibly bland.

What exactly is missing from this description?

That it is a nostalgic game with as such appeal and not supposed to mesh in the way that a full game, centered around a single sub-gene does. It is something unique and needs a diffrent point of view as well as a step back to admire the overall and compleat picture. Not something that is to be broken down into tiny parts, with each dissected and comparing each individual sub-genre.

Trying the easy way out of an argument?
I'm saying the game is bland based on evidence from the game itself. You countered by saying that I "don't get it" and talking in very vague terms.
You're also saying "I liked it" without expanding on why. That's neither insightful nor interesting to read. Can you give me something that proves my argument wrong and gives me food for thought?

Because it is true. One can not argue opinion. Your evidence is based solely on your opinion as there is no mean by which it can be proven or disproven.

I am not being vague at all. I am stating my opinion on said game. I have explained how and why I liked it a few times already.

I am not trying to prove your opinion wrong as it is your opinion. I am simply giving mine and pointing out where I disagree with yours.

You are the one making it into an argument, one that is based only on opinion. Sorry you are angry that I don't agree with you on your opinion, but I do have my own opinion on the game.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I wanted to input my opinion as well. I objectively liked Evoland as compared to the second installment in this series. Evoland as an evolving rpg was a ton of fun and I enjoyed all the evolving aspects as I went through the game and 100% completed it.
However Evoland 2, in my opinion, is nothing but a bland dreadful sequel to what was an amazing game. While there are aspects of that same evolving rpg I feel that the whole time travel aspect is bland and overplayed. Having said this, I still enjoyed what I played of the game until we got to some boss fights. The boss fights in evoland 2 feel clunky and overtly hard and unfair when there have been no fights that have taught you the mechanics that help you defeat the boss. Not to even mention the crashing in the middle of the boss fight against plum when she takes your super bomb.
Closing statement: Evoland was objectively better in being an evolving rpg and evoland 2 just felt lazy with the story and tried to make the game "evolve" through time travel.

I played both games too now, and I also love Evoland 1 a lot more...

I wanted to ask because it seems like no one has ever posted on this topic ever. does the story continue? or is it a redux? from 1 to 2.

Evoland 1 and 2 aren't related at all. Just a few references here and there, but nothing important.

thank you! i started playing now, i can never seen to find evo 1 cheap enough.

i got it for 1$ in a bundle. Evoland 1 was created in a 48h developper marathon contest and after, a remake was done with updated graphics and controller support.
The Evoland 2 game is better and longer.
