Right click on your desktop and select 'Display Settings' then set the HTC monitor (Windows see the HTC as another monitor) set it to your main monitor so it opens up the game on it so when you put on your vive it will show it. A bit confusing but i can go into more detail if needed.
I tried that dude. I disabled direct mode on the settings menu but it just turns the display into a fixed viewed image (desktop mode), and I have to squint my eyes to see the screen. I can play all other VR games fine. Just this one thats a bit tricky. I've checked my GPU drivers and all are up to date, re-installed steam, Re-installed the game, Ran as administrator, checked my HDMI and DVI connections, both are connected to my GPU. I'm outta new stuff to try. I've emailed the developer too and it seems he's stumped.
Very odd : / I myself have never tried the game "The MGS Fan Legacy" if you want i could buy it and test it out myself, maybe it is the game not you?
Possibly, I was thinking that. Its a free to download game through the link below. If you wouldn't mind trying it i'd appreciate that. No one else seems to have reported it to him. https://mega.nz/#!cBx2HKpA!8jcEE26ygn7aQUNZHmxOXPVa286R-PmbC_k64Q1vW30
ok, i will have to do it tomorrow since my wifi sucks :(
No problem, I should really get some work done anyway haha. Thanks for your help, I'll catch up with you tomorrow.
Wait MGS or Metal Gear Solid? Is there VR for that? Never heard of it
Yeah man, its an MGS VR experience. They were originally making a MGS1 remake with the UE4 engine and had David Hayter on board, but Konami shut them down. They have made a VR experience instead. I've had an email from the developer saying that a few more people have reported the issue so it looks like it could be a programming issue.

I found the reason and solution. If "The Lab" game works good and others not, then you have the same issue as I am

Most part of these games made with Unreal Engine 4 and as a developer who uses it I remembered that UE4 is not very good with not English language characters (Unicode sort of ♥♥♥♥). Maybe other engines have this problem too.

So, what I've done to make it work:
1. I uninstalled all this games, SteamVR and Steam too.
2. In Windows 10 go to Settings -> Time&Language -> Region & Language -> Set English language as default (install it if needed) -> click on "Additional date, time, & region settings" -> Region -> Administrative -> Copy Settings -> choose both check boxes and click Ok
3. In Region -> Administrative -> Change system locale -> choose English(United States)
4. If your current Windows user's name (account name) not in English language (my name was typed with Cirillic Alphabet) you should create new user in English
5. Relogin under new user then install all stuff again

This should work on Windows 7 too. Just keep in mind the main reason: characters Unicode problem

Maybe I made some extra steps to solve it. Maybe you don't need to change language for whole Windows, maybe it is enough to change "Current language for non-Unicode programs" option and set up new User in English, but i never checked it, because I feel comfortable with this settings

Regards,
Sergey
Thanks aitechtor, you led me to the correct path.

I've had the same issue for a long time, some of the games would open in headset (The Lab and Job Simulator) but others only in the monitor (Budget Cuts Demo for example). It turns out it was the windows username that was wrong for me. My OS was set to Finnish language and the default username for a user was "Käyttäjä", which was messing everything up.

I'm not sure if simply changing that name would help (not sure if it will rename the C:/Users folders or not) but I solved it by creating a new user for my computer without using any funny characters, installed Steam on it and reinstalled the VR games in that client. Works like a charm now. Of course I need to switch logins now every time I want to play VR, but probably you could work around that somehow too. I installed the Steam into the User folder of my new account, so technically I should be able to run it from my other account too through that path, I think.

But yeah, windows user naming was the problem for me. :)

I have the same issue (games run on monitor instead of the headset). Once I called Vive Support. They remote controlled my computer and figured out for some unknown reason, I have to use USB2.0 ports instead of USB3.0. Four months passed and now I have the same issue again even with USB2.0. All devices(bases, HDM and controllers) become green on SteamVR window but no matter what I do (direct mode, restarting, reinstalling usb drivers, etc), games run on the monitor instead of HMD.

Here is my system report:

SteamVR Version 2016-12-16 (1481926580)

Display 2: NvAPI 2160x1200 @ (0, 0) NVIDIA Direct Mode
my issue was resolved by :
1 - Go to Device Manager and disable the onboard (intel) graphic card
2 - Connect all the monitors and the headset to the dedicated graphic card. Nothing should be attached to the onboard graphic card port.
3 - Restart your computer
4 - Run Steam in admin mode (right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator).
5 - Make sure the SteamVR is running in "Direct Mode".(SteamVR>Settings>Developer).
6 - Run the game.

Note: For connecting two monitors and the headset to the dedicated graphic card, you probably need special cable or converter. I used HDMI to DP1.4 converter to connect my second monitor to DP port and used DVI cable to connect my first monitor. For the VR headset I used the HDMI port.

So I used HDMI port, DVI port and DisplayPort 1.4 on the dedicated graphic card at the end.
