I'm not entirely sure, but I think this might be Apogee's best platforming game - and definitely one of their best games overall. The game feels great and works great in everything. It looks good, the soundtrack is good, controls work very well, combat is very fun and the game is quite challenging. The five difficulties grant the game a highly variable challenge level - they don't just change how much health the characters have or how many gems you get, but they also slightly change the layout for some levels. The last difficulty level even adds auto screen scrolling to some levels that normally don't have it, forcing players to be on their toes even on some levels where they'd normally be able to take their time with.

The only things I didn't enjoy too much about this game is that the episode 2 final boss is way too hard in comparison to the rest of the game and the ending is quite lackluster.

An incredibly awesome game, definitely recommended.

I'm surprised no one else reviewed this game. I bought it as part of the 3d Realms anthology. A set of classics that are mostly excellent (though some have already been released like Raptor and Shadow Warrior Classic).

Realm of Chaos had good graphics for a game of its time and was well advanced for a game of its time. A nice smooth scrolling platformer game. The sounds are expected of a game of its time, but the graphics are very nice. The game play is pretty straightforward.

This is definitely a game for nostaglia.

This is an arcade-style fantasy action platformer. It lacks the polish and tightness of controls that arcade and console greats of the time had, such as Astyanax or Ghouls & Ghosts. But its difficulty is achievable, and a very PC oriented 'save anywhere' system makes it so that it's actually beatable. There are a lot of obnoxious deathtraps, and Castlevania-style enemy-knocking-you-into-a-pit style traps, but with saving and loading this becomes beatable. I finished it in under 4 hours.
The boss battles are challenging and difficult to master, for the most part, and the character-switching mechanic reminds me a bit of Lost Vikings, though without any of the fun puzzle solving. The levels kinda drone on and often have some trial-and-error nonsense. Combat is sluggish and platforming is imprecise.
Honestly looking back, there's not that much that's especially enjoyable about this game. But what can I say? It was an entertaining and challenging diversion, and that's what old video games are often best at. So if that's what you're looking for, Realms of Chaos is recommended for you.

TLDR: Charming despite its age. However the platforming is imprecise, the combat is unsatisfying and the level design is bland. Nostalgia only.

Getting Knockbacked Into A Spike Pit Simulator 1995.
Probably good for it's time, but frustrating to play now unless you like bats killing you out of nowhere.

For its time Realms of Chaos had great graphics and most importantly incredible control response. Apogee did a good job with this release.

With that said, I still feel like the game is lacking something. It's hard to put to words but when you play the game there is this odd response. I suppose you'll have to give it a try to understand where I am coming from.
