i inserted another step: unplug the power (non orange side) to the break-out-box, wait a few moments, and plug it back in again.
you should then hear the pings of devices being discovered/installed, and hopefully with the correct drivers.
maybe this is particular to my case. maybe it might have worked if i restarted my system (i did not want to risk the wrong drivers being read again with the rediscovery and installation of the rest of my still uninstalled bluetooth devices) but im too tired because of the time ive already spent on this to care to understand it any more! HTC/Valve, please fix your ♥♥♥♥♥.

You can easily test if this is your issue as well, by disconnecting the linkbox from your computer and plugging in the headsets HDMI- & USB cable directly into the computer. But the headset still needs power though, so let the headsets power cable be connected to the linkbox to supply it with power.
If it works, you probably have a faulty linkbox, and a new one only costs like 30 bucks.
