Updating the Firmware on the Base Stations doesn't work!
Hi, I got my Vive today and have had a play about already.

I have alreday managed to upgrade the firmware for the headset and the controllers and SteamVR keeps saying that I am able to upgrade the firmware on my base stations as well.

I follow the instructions on the screen: Unplug the base station from power, plug it into the PC with the usb cable, hold down the sync buttton, and plug in the power. However nothing happens!

What's going on here?

How do I upgrade my firmware?

I've even tried holding the sync button and waiting a few minutes, nothing happens! Sometimes it tells me that the upgrade has failed after a while.

Please help.

Try to update the lighthouse wirelessly
What you doing sounds more like manual flashing it
Just put it in power and see it green in SteamVR then do SteamVR 》devices 》update frimware

Most of the people I know had the same problem, there has been breaking bug some time ago. You will need to send those for repairs :(

I had the same problem a while back, I solved it by plugging it into all my usb ports, I found only one that worked, try that m8

You nearly gave me a heart attack :D I'm sorry if you had to do that yourself, it would suck.

Good tip, saves unplugging the stations. However it would also fail on me.

What helped me is the reply at the bottom of this thread(deleting usb devices):

I also made sure to only unplug one base station at a time when updating them this time. Not sure if this had any effect on the outcome, but they're both updated now :D

Well it should. HTC has the worst support I've seen. Recently my linkbox AND my 3 in 1 cable broke(no, no physical demage whatsoever, they just stopped working properly almost at the same time) and I've been sending them one piece of hardware after another FIVE TIMES since begining of march before they(or rather me) realised it is linkbox and 3 in 1 cable that is broken. I'm still without Vive... Gonna write a story about it on those forums and maybe other places because it is ridiculus how they work and people should be aware of it.
Faulty basestation was repaired fairly fast for me so at least there is that :]

Having the exact same problem, upgrading firmware via cable does nothing

Well.... you just update... If you have bluetooth enabled as you should then you just click update in SteamVR and it's updating. Although if it's not updating via cable then it's probably broken and needs to be repaired.

Do you need a Bluetooth computer to do the update wirelessly ?

Yeah, you have to have that. If you dont, you can pick up a dongle really cheap. Think I saw them for like $15.

Youll want blue tooth too because you can set it up so that the base stations turn off when you turn off the VR. If you dont do that, they will run all of the time and there are moving parts in there. Some say it can wear them out prematurely.

It was really easy to setup blue tooth, and the choice to turn them off wirelessly is there in the setup settings. I clicked on a box and it installed a blue tooth driver for me. My new PC had blue tooth I guess. I didnt even know it. You could try that like me.

Its in settings I think. Havning trouble remembernig. You have to set up blutooth there. It will install a driver, or at least mine did. Then when you update there is an option to do it wirelessly.

I did mine by USB wire. At first it wouldnt work. I had issues too. I unplugged the power to the basestation several times and then it worked. Took like 15 seconds. You have to have them plugged into the PC by USB and have the dc power connected. Dont know why, but on both of mine I had to unplug the power several times while they were plugged into the usb port.Try that if you havent. Dont forget you have to press the channel button on the back too. Something about that procedure of hitting that button and the power being plugged in was buggy.
