Trouble on the final boss

So I get through the first three phases fairly easily. Then on the fourth phase, where he brings out those blocker things you have to destroy, I get through the first phase without trouble but the final triggering thump doesn't break the blockers. It does nothing, boss waits a bit, then resets and phase four starts again.

If by "the final triggering thump" you mean the one that you use to damage the boss, then yeah, that isn't supposed to break the shields. You have to break them yourself before that point, with jump-pound combos, in order to let the damaging thump pass through to the boss.

So is it enough that I just jump on the second to last thump and pound the final thump?

That's not enough, no. You'll need to use the "normal" thumps in that section to break the shields before you get to the final thump. Jump from one, pound the next to release a shield-breaking shockwave. Repeat that twice more (I believe there are three shields, right?). Then, once the three shields are open, the final thump can pass through and damage the boss.

I've actually found that smashing the "final triggering thump" can actually break through exactly one shield, so you can have your metaphorical cake and eat it too, if you know what I mean.

Huh. As a quick check I just loaded up 3-1 and it doesn't seem to work there (awww), but maybe levels with three shields are handled slightly differently. I'll let someone else do another run through level 9 to check that one :)
