What do you guys think of WB copyrighting the Nemesis system?
This may be abit late, but recently the WB corporation copyrighted the Nemesis system for a couple decades, making other companies unable to do a system like it. Do you think it was justified or a selfish act that will ultimately hurt the games industry.

Wow, completely missed the mark. I said that the gaming industry may have been hurt by Namco's patent a lot more because loading screens exist in pretty much every single game. Where did I say that people were gonna buy more Namco games over such a silly patent? I didn't say that. I implied that many other devs could have used that system in their games but couldn't. In comparison, how many would be able to even use anything remotely close to Nemesis system? Very few indeed. Do. You. Understand. Now?

Also, it's funny you think of consumers first when talking about these patents but you should be thinking down the line of competitors and other companies/developers who could be stealing your creative ideas. Why should companies allow others to just blindly steal their, I should say, rather UNIQUE and CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE work just to make profit?

Video games are a business, not something made and sold for free just because some people have too much time on their hands. If your business ideas are used by others for profit, it wouldn't sit right by you

Also, try to understand this, if a company uses a creative ideas from others, it DOESN'T give them credit for it. Anywhere in the game, not an easter egg, not in end game screen. Nowhere it will tell you anything like "we used X game from Y company as a huge inspiration to create our work". They just take it, make a game, and sell it for profit

I too have no hopes for no Wonder Woman, didn't even know that was a thing until I read that previous post lol. We need another "Shadow Of" game

p.s. I wanna add this - I know it can definitely hurt gamers down the line when all things ever get patented

If we take Resident Evil 4 as an example - this game revolutionized the gaming industry by implementing a 3rd person camera shooting/over the shoulder for the FIRST time

Capcom could have probably patented that, being the first ones to actually do that. Imagine the horrors that would have followed

We wouldn't have masterpieces like Mass Effect trilogy or Dead Space trilogy or they would have to work in some other camera mode, or even first person or whatever

However, I'd also like to point out yet again that things like Over-The-Shoulder aiming/camera exists to a much broader "sense", as in, it's just always there, unless there's a cutscene playing

Nemesis system is simply a game mechanic, one of many that exists within a game

Shadow of games could have worked even without that system and both of them could have turned out to be decent games, cuz me personally? I like killing standard orcs slowing down time with headshots with my bow. No patent is required for that

You either have a family member at wb or just enjoy bootlicking billion dollar companies with how much you cape for the dumpster fire that is wb
nice necro lol
How copyriting a system works? Did they copyright the idea of generating NPCs with strong
and weak sides and personalities and remembering their encounters with player? Or did they copyright the coding for it? If it's the first one does it mean that startup or indie devs can't implement something like this from scratch in their games? If they can't that just sucks.

It doesn't. Copyright only applies to creative elements.

You can't copyright systems or methods of operation; those can only be patented.

The answer to all of your questions is "no".

Now that Monolith is shut down are there any people at WB who can actually create something new with Nemesis? It is a wasted potential if they won't make a game with patenting mechanics.

WB shut down Monolith but Wb stills owns other game development studios. Since WB owns the patent on the Nemesis system, they could in theory tell any of their game studios to make a game with it. Unless I misunderstand how patents work.

Sure, if studio is owned by WB, it can create new game with Nemesis since both things belongs to one company. The question is does WB wanna make new Nemesis at all.
But I also mean that only Monolith knew how to properly make it work. Im afraid that if new game with Nemesis will be developed, does that studio can make Nemesis work on par, if not better, than SoW?
Like, Dark Souls 2 was not developed by Hidetaka and it's very controversial because of some strange changes and worse level design, Ninja Gaiden 3 has butchered series' main features because it was developed not by Itagaki who is the only person who knew exactly how Ninja Gaiden should be made, but he left studio soon after Ninja Gaiden 2 was released. Thief 3 is worse than previous games and lost many cool features because Looking Glass was closed by that time and it was developed by other studio Other studios simly don't have any experience with making Nemesis-like mechanics.

The former employees of Monolith are between opportunities. If a studio owned by WB was told to make a game with the nemesis system, they could just hire some of the former employees of Monolith if they felt they needed the help.
