Styx 1 is a game based on Unreal Engine 3, and it does not look that good as in Shards of Darkness, which is Unreal Engine 4 game.

I'd recommend it. If you like stealth-em-ups like Thief, Dishonored, and Styx 2, then Styx 1 is more of the same. Plus, the story may make a bit more sense when you know WHY he exclaims over certain characters....

Even if the ending of the first game says it DOESN'T make sense...

actually you should play also Of Orcs and Men, amazing story.

Custom 3.5 actually, so the difference in overall quality isn't as pronounced as you'd expect. Though I do advise a good SweetFX or RMB to sharpen up the muddy colour palette

If you just want a good game then grab 2 since it's a straight up upgrade over 1 in controls and overall "feel".

As for the graphics... 2 is better. 1 took place almost exclusively in severs and various dank dungeons so the color palette was almost exclusively dark and muddy sans for maybe 2 maps.
2 has a bit more color and outdoor areas.

And the story... 1 and 2 are somewhat loosely tied but you can play 1 if you want to know who the hell is Styx.
Then there's also "Of Orcs and Men" both games are prequels to and sometimes reference.

I was playing the Styx 2 demo and bought Styx 1 after it to start with. I did not regret it, although Styx 2 is obviously the better game, not only engine wise.

I also read a review + video about Of Orcs And Men, they said the game would have great characters and got the potential to be great, but would lack a lot in leveldesign (tunnels) and the fighting system. So I skipped the title. It also is not a stealthgame if that matters.

Get BOTH!

Styx 1+2 are AMAZING dude. I love good stealth and it's so hard to find a good real stealth release these days. These devs are amazing and the real successors to Looking Glass. Forget Arkane and Dishonored, this is the real spiritual successor to Thief.

Yeah I was surprised how much fun Styx is, cause it didn't get that much attention afaik.
Btw, although I also like Dishonored, I'd rather love to see Arkane to make another Dark Messiah (of Might and Magic) game or similiar as that. *sigh* Memories. ;-)
I gave both games, like, 4.5/5 out of 5 (I forget exact scores) but our readership is quite small :(

just a mention with the palette here: it makes sense in the world of the first one, considering where you're at the whole time. But agreed, the lighter/ more open areas in 2 definitely make a difference. If you liked 2 well enough to get it, might as well get both.

It's small bc you're telling the truth brother, don't worry you'll get there you've gained a reader already. Btw you guys looking for any contributors? I'm also trying to make my mark. Obviously pm me I don't wanna hijack the thread xD

it's ok. Problem is, 1 has level recycling as well. BUT the levels are much smaller and mostly very linear to get through. They look big but that's an illusion as there is often one linear way from one end to the other with very little alternatives.

So for the second half of the game you often follow your own footsteps thorugh the same corridors and rooms in the opposite direction. That felt very very lazy.

The bigger levels in 2 with much more freedom and ways through make the backtracking considerably less annoying.

Still, it's good enough. If you liked 2 you wont hate 1. And it's not as if there are THAT many stealth games.

Also the story is it's own thing.

I also disliked the level recycling of Styx1. At least the 2nd run through differs a bit though. To me it looks like they ran out of money during Styx1. Cause also the story-videos were confusing when the characters suddenly looked so different to the ingame models.

1 has better level design, art direction, and music, and a much, much, much better story.

2 has better graphics and slightly better gameplay, and multiplayer.

Personally if they remade 1 with 2's graphics I'd buy it in a heartbeat. 1's only real problem was lack of polish and 2 was really, really well polished.

They're both really good but if you only get one, 1 is better. 2 may be more accessible if not a stealth fan.
