But it looks like this game will be much beter than first one so it could be kinda hard to return to first one after finishing this one so choice is yours.
This game takes place 50 years after the first game (goblin lifespan is apparently very great [possibly immortal]) and as such it's simply not right chronologically if you play the second first. It's not like many other games where the sequels are completely separate adventures with maybe only easter eggs giving a nod to it's former. More likely than not this is going to build off of what happened in the first game. (no spoilers)
But seriously, if you play the second before playing the first you aren't going to LIKE the first. The second game has a MUCH bigger budget and those who have already played the first game will still always appreciate it, however when this comes out it'll most likely boot the first game out of the water.
For example when I first actually took the time to get into the AC series I decided to play AC 4 against my brothers warning. And I absolutely loved the game AC 4 is known and widely considered to be the pinnacle of the AC series (currently) especially after the downhill and outcry of negative reviews coming after the release of AC unity and the only up-to-par AC syndicate. After playing AC 4 I decided to give the others a go, and because I had played literally the best game in the series first EVERYTHING else I played after (minus unity and syndicate, which I have not tried) seemed meh at best. (minus AC revolution, that one was good too) The naval combat first presented in AC 3 Absolutely pales to the improvements they made to the system in AC 4. My point being...
The budget for Styx shards of Darkness is much greater than what they had for Styx Master of shadows, and as such the game itself will probably be of a much better quality. (Again not saying the first one wasn't good, it was great [which is why I recommend to play it first] the naval system of AC 3 vs. AC 4 is a good reference point for how this will likely pan out for you). Not only this but they will be able to utilize community and press feedback / coverage to improve the game and will also learn from the mistakes they made in the first game (however they were patched shortly after release) so they won't even appear in the second.
Summary: If you buy shards of darkness first, it is more than likely you will not enjoy master of shadows or at the very least not enjoy it to it's fullest extent. Why would you buy 1 game, and enjoy the experience at a "meh" level when you could buy the first game, enjoy it the same way you would the second game, and then buy the second game and be blown out of the water with a much greater experience built off of the already great first game.
Very basic summary:
If you buy this game first, you are buying the experience of only 1 game.
However if you buy the first game 1st, then you get to enjoy the experiences of 2 games.
My advice? buy Styx: Master of Shadows literally RIGHT now, so you don't end up thinking about it too much and wasting time and then making the wrong decision. (First game first, second game second.) and play it through before march 14th rolls around. OR at least play it enough that you get enveloped in the story enough so that you don't even bat an eye when it comes to the second game until you have finished the first.
Well technically it's already the second, "Of orcs and men" was first Styx game, but that's not nearly as good.
While waiting for the release of the hopefully even better new one.
BTW Seiko300 While Black Flag was ok (but WAY too simplfied sea battles which ruined its main feature for me) i don't really accept it as Assassins Creed game. It falls short in every point that made the series amazing before. Such as story, main character, interesting cities...
It's a bit like with people that discovered Deus ex only with Human Revolution and now complain about "too few Boss Fights" in the new one...
PS: Played rogue? Its basically Black Flag in the Atlantic. Story is as irrelevant but its got sea battles.
OK, the game is not out yet but at least they could have allowed a pre-load. This way the servers would handle the downloads better and we are ready to hit the Play button.
Years ago, I wanted to hate and criticize S:MoS based on nothing but the fact that it starred a goblin. Yes, that's how closed-minded I was. I thought that it was a ridiculous concept that a goblin was the protagonist. After having been put in my place by my own curiosity, I would easily wait another ten years for perfection. A few days wait to get the game on launch day is no substitute for a company that cares about its customers, and puts out a product that they put all their heart in. What sours me is the fact that the Styx series is not as popular as it deserves to be.
Regardless, enjoy your vidya, my friends.
