I put off writing this review for nearly a year. I had a lot going on but also wanted to wait it out a bit and see how it went. First off, I rate this 1000/10. Yes, I really mean it. It's been good since day 1, and has only gotten better.

To get the biggest out of the way. It is now a 64bit executable, meaning it can now access more than 4GB of RAM. Entire categories of bugs and crashes, especially in modded games and custom maps, are entirely fixed from this change alone.

Despite posts I see online claiming otherwise, it is also no longer single core, and can use all of that lovely CPU you have, which I just tested. That said, the game engine was written in 2003 so doesn't EFFICIENTLY use it by today's standards. The game will still choke, sputter, and screen tear near endgame in an 8 player match where everyone is Orks and your settings are maxxed. But it'll take way longer to get that bad, and personally I've never seen it struggle on 6 player or below on max settings. =^P

There's also a ton of graphical upgrades. You can zoom out further. Metal is actually shiny now. Both textures and models have higher resolution/polygons. FX, glow, and lighting all function better.

Now here is where I'm going to get into my personal feelings as somebody who's been playing since ~2005. If you counted modding creation time and everything else on top of ingame time? Idk even. Probably 10k+ hours at absolute minimum.

Relic ♥♥♥♥ ed up a couple major things with this release, and all of them were PR issues that lead to missed expectations from buyers unfamiliar with the game's history, not issues with the game itself.

The worst offender: Not explaining to buyers the sacrifices "maintaining 20 years of mod [and custom map] compatibility" entails. This stuff has been fixed, but warning in the meantime would have been nice for new players.

My history: I picked up modding this game when Winter Assault, the first expansion, was released in late 2005. The engine was probably coded beginning in 2003 or earlier. This engine is older than most college students. There are entire forums that had a 10+yr lifespan, died with no warning, and took tons of mods, custom maps, and community tools with them. The fact that this runs on modern hardware at all is already an achievement. Modding this game is what got me so deeply into computers and changed the trajectory of my life and career immensely, even after I fell out of love with W40k. (This rerelease has gotten me back into it.)

The good:

• Supporting existing mods and custom maps at all in a 2025 remaster is truly insane. This is the only remaster I've ever seen that this cleanly still supports mods and maps for the original release instead of forcing everybody to port. Many mods work with 0 porting. And porting has been done by modders, but IN COOPERATION with Relic, and to take advantage of the Definitive Edition improvements. Every update, Relic is ALSO changing code to make old mods work better and porting mods and maps even easier. In fact, if you have the original Soulstorm installed as well, it will load mods from there. I cannot stress enough how bonkers it is that mod support is such a 2 way street. Especially for a remaster of a AAA title that's old enough to drink.
  
• SCAR docs, console commands, debugging, and other tools: Back in the 2000's, Relic did something insane for the time and unimaginable in 2026: they released internal dev tools to the modding community. Today, IP lawyers and exec teams would piss themselves at this idea. It happens here and there with other games, but they're usually some form of neutered/heavily stripped of internal secrets, or indie studios. And Relic, with this release, doubled down on empowering modders. Packed with the game install now is a ton of docs on how SCAR ("Scripting at Relic"), the very primitive and heavily modified version of early 2000's LUA they used back then, works, because at the time working with it was sorcery (and some of the modders' names that did cool stuff with it are burned into my brain to this day as idols). They also re-enabled cheats that were disabled in the steam release (yes, I originally played this with CDs and CD keys to enable expansions) and exposed a TON of dev and debugging console commands, PLUS shipped the files that contain the keybinds for them as config files that you can just edit in a text editor (after adding -dev to your launch options).
  
• Multiplayer, while still glitchy, works, including with mods, as long as the players' installs are IDENTICAL. Mods MUST be installed in the same order, etc., just like the old days.

The bad:

• Any modder and a lot of mod users know that one of the first things modders do, especially in old games, is exploit (frequently undocumented) bugs to make their mods work. Modders also repurpose existing systems constantly, far past their intended usage. This instantly turns ALL. BUGFIXING. AND. CHANGES. INTO. LANDMINES. This simple explanation would have given Relic so much grace in the forums and reviews. A terrible PR move on the part of Relic, especially since it was paired with such an awesome justification. So many people were pissed that old bugs were left in- no, it's not that bugs were left in, it's that functional modding was prioritized. After release, for example, Relic basically immediately broke the Ultimate Apocalypse mod (a formerly very popular mod I was briefly on the mod team of, tho Unification seems to be the play these days and clocks in at like 30 factions) because Relic fixed a bug they didn't know UA was exploiting to load A DEPENDENCY to run the game (not even to run UA itself). But nobody had touched DoW's code in 15+yrs, so it was totally valid for UA to do this.
  
• And you thought it was just bugs. Lol. No, there's extensive REPURPOSING modders do, too. Nobody at Relic assumed some random modder would use fluid physics for lava instead of water, and now Relic improves how lighting works in the game and finds out the hard way modded lava happened in some random custom map sometime in the last 20 years by getting yelled at in bug reports for... remastering lighting. lol. I do not envy them.
  
• Expand this pattern over 20 years? Yeah that's a lot of bugs AND existing systems you have to be careful touching. Which means in many cases, Relic has to manually add in convoluted workarounds that allow existing mods and custom maps to still exploit the """bug""" while simultaneously fixing the bug that the player sees. Yes, it's paradoxical and insane, and, especially for repurposing cases, they're forced to leave a ton of legacy code in place that is disabled entirely for 95% of users simply to allow some random edge cases to not explode. Bless you, Relic, and for how sacred of an art you treat modding.

Anyway. All in all, seeing this remaster has blown my mind. It's crazy how well Relic has walked the line between remastering a game written 20 years ago, and reWRITNG a game written 20 years ago. I don't think they've made a single change that has damaged the game's identity, only allowed it to realize more fully.

Finally, don't be scared of ModDB: Go on there, get Unification Mod, run the installer. I've poured a few tens of hours into playing it, it's great. Steam Workshop integration is unlikely due to engine limitations. ModDB is old, standard, and safe, and it's not like the old days- you pretty much just gotta download and run the installer/launcher, no more 5 nested mods nonsense.

And don't forget about custom/modded maps, which are just drag and drop into the maps folder. I mostly didn't touch them until this release and feel insane for it- there's plenty of TRUE 4v4 maps instead of ones meant for 2v2v2v2 as well, all kinds of wild SCAR scripted mini-campaigns, list goes on. It's crazy.

The best 40k RTS ever made. Hands down. I must have put hundreds of hours into this game back in the day. Has all of the expansion packs. Plays great. I've been hoping that they would do this for so long. Just found it yesterday. For the Emperor!!!
