You should have your recharge rate at Increased for lasers and shift F10 I think will transfer energy from lasers to shields or maybe it is F9 you should experiment. I have so many hours in X-Wing and Tie Fighter. I hope to get the complete set next week.
you can also dump shield energy into your lasers and vice versa.
Speed and maneuverability are the only advantages you have in this game (at least until later), so charging your lasers at full rate (which cuts a TF's speed by 25% IIRC, slower than a Y-Wing) makes you an easy target and should be avoided when in combat. Only ever use "increased" rate (slow recharge) unless you're out of battle or fighting a slow enemy that can't shoot you, like a freighter.
Later, once you get beams, I recommend most of the time just setting the beam charge to -2, fully dumping beam power into your engines to give you the best speed and maneuverability boost you can get for those pesky A-Wings. Tractor beam can be helpful there too though, so whatever works best for your style.
Anytime there's a quiet in the combat, quickly redirect ALL engine power to recharging your lasers, shields (when applicable), and beams (when applicable). When your lasers and/or beams are full, transfer all their stored energy to your shield. There's keys for redirecting stored energy, I want to say it's "apostrophe" is for lasers -> shield and "semicolon" is for shield -> lasers. I forget what the keys is for beam -> shield and shield -> beam.
