New player friendly?
So I only played this for a bit like 8 years ago. Is this game full of people who have been playing religiously since launch or are there people with different skill levels?

The ratio is kind of hard to find, honestly. Mostly you find both groups: the hardcore players who can get 100 kills per match, and the scrubs who think they're playing Vassily Zaitzev and die 100 times. I'd say the middle ground, players who play occasionally and are not the worst but they're not good either, is fairly low. Most people who play the game play it for a bit then never again due to it not being what they want in a game, since its so brutally realistic.

Short answer is, plenty of vets and scrubs but less mid tiers. Still a blast to play though, as long as you dont play on the Nazi RP Admin servers.

I feel like there's a small number of 15,000 hour oldies doing their own thing, but they either stick to their favourite points on the map or take SL/TL roles and trying to get teamwork going.

Just play, stick to cover and use safety in numbers, you'll learn quick!

most ro2 players with 1k+ hours are genuinely not good at video games.

Actually, I find a good mix of noobs, mids, good players, and absolute beasts.

It is entirely plausible as well for noobs and mids to kill the high levels due to guns and gun damage being realistic (one or two shots in chest means dead, depending on gun). The only way you'll really struggle is with lag, lack of map knowledge, and having bad SLs and TLs.

The more you play a map, you'll recognize hidey holes where enemies hide or where you can hide safely.

Having good SLs and TLs coordinating the entire team is also a blessing

A good SL is one that stays alive in the relative proximity of a position you must cap or defend, whereas a TL only needs to throw decent arty. Tip of the day: Dont take a role you dont know how to use properly. Im 100% ok with a newbie taking rifleman or even elite assault, but i am NOT ok with a noob taking SL and bayonet charging without spawning.

Squad leader section will help you understand the role.

you don't need to worry about getting your butt kicked unfairly anymore because the best player, Plupp, died back in december 2021.
