Side Scroller?
I haven't played Unity in ages, so I didn't even noticed that this was finally released until today. :-) (I default my Library to show only installed games.)

Anyway, mildly excited, I install and run this, and what do I find? A side scroller? Really? That's what all the fuss was about last year with all the "When is Chronicles: China ever going to be released?!?!?!?" posts (here and on Ubi's forums)?

Yeah, I concede that I'm the misinformed person here, but still, I find it incredible that the "informed" people were so excited for a side scroller.

why not? What's wrong with a side scroller. It plays pretty well. It's kind of like a throwback to the original Prince of Persia games, with more stealth involved.

It's limited, in any and all contexts.

Castlevania SOTN is a side scroller platformer and hailed as one of the best games of all time. Your narrow POV is so awful.

Seriously? An 18 year old game? Well, why stop there if you are going to make inane, irrelevant comparisons? Why not Mario Bros? Or even spderweb's above reference, Prince of Persia?

And regardless, how does any of that counter my statement in any way? I stated a fact which you can't refute; you stated an opinion. Tell me, who's going to win this debate in the end?

Edit: Heh.. I just moused over your pic and saw that you are currently playing Dota 2, so never mind. I didn't know you were one of those people. Forget it. I have no interest in debating you; it'd be pointless.

I'm playing many games. Much more than you've been in your entire life. Problem?

In fact, MOBA is the most evolving genre nowadays, much more than you can imagine in that narrow POV of yours.

Fact.

Perhaps talking with private profile who's commonly associated with scammers not be a good idea for me. Perhaps you're arranging something to scam my valuable items, as privates usually poor people. =\

the informed ppl were excited because the Asian assassin is something everyone wanted, Much more so after that little gift at the end of one of the games where they show a freaking Asian assassin but than did nothing afterwards until this. (I think AC2 or one of its off-shoots.. can't remember)

not everyone has such a ridiculous collection as you or the urge to show it off.... playing more games doesn't make you an expert, just experienced.... the OP may have been rude but your post was nonsense top to bottom

I assume zeroxxx's point in mentioning SotN was to indicate that side-scrolling games are not inherently bad and are more than capable of receiving widespread critical acclaim. And to that end, sure, go ahead and mention Mario Bros and Prince of Persia, because they only serve to strengthen that point--a point which I'm not entirely sure why you're labeling as "inane" or "irrelevant" when "side-scrollers can be very successful games" is pretty definitively an answer to "why were people excited for a side-scroller?" It may not be the best answer, but it certainly isn't irrelevant.

Don't get me wrong; if you were expecting the same AC gameplay that you've come to expect, I can completely understand why a side-scroller would be surprising to dive into. But you seem to be under the impression that it means it's fundamentally doomed to be worse off for it, which is just a very silly jump to make. Sure, there are obvious limitations but that also means there's more opportunity for structure... which isn't to mention that these limitations hardly feel as such when Chronicles pretty clearly isn't even trying to emulate previous installments in the franchise. "Different" doesn't always mean "worse," and I think that trying something new in a spin-off title is as much a breath of fresh air as it is a good idea. Particularly when the main series has been pushing out more of the same (with a few new bells and whistles) with each annual release.

I admit that I only recently discovered this game, but I jumped on it almost immediately because of what I'd seen of it. I'd been looking for something to scratch that Mark of the Ninja itch, and so far this has been more or less successful in doing that--and I wouldn't be at all surprised to discover that at least a handful of other consumers who picked up Chronicles were in a similar boat. This is because, despite being a 2-D game, Mark of the Ninja made it abundantly clear that side-scrolling stealth games are capable of being successful, which (due to this game's similarities) I can only imagine that Ubisoft took note of in its decision to make this.

In short, people were probably excited for this game because it's an affordable spin-off (which draws inspiration from a well-received title) that offers a fresh take on a franchise that is otherwise becoming tedious and doesn't threaten to overtake the mainline games. Obviously I can't speak for everyone who was interested in and/or bought Chronicles, but I hope this illustrates why someone who was informed might be excited for this game, rather than close-minded.
