Steam Link app + xbox controller menu button problem
I'm using the Apple TV Steam Link app. I have tested two xbox controllers, both have the same issue. So I assume its not a fault in the controller's side. When I start the app there is this screen which lets you verify that the buttons on the controller are working. I can press and hold all of them except the menu button (formerly "start" button). The menu button flashes but does not stay pressed. I suspect that the button actually double fires, because in games where this button opens the menu the menu appears but also closes immediately.

Does anybody have any ideas where should I look for to fix this? The problem can be observed in the Steam Link app, and, once Remote Play connection has been established, also in the controller test screen on Steam Big Picture as well.

This is quite troublesome... I already mistakenly blamed a developer for releasing a broken game but turns out its my own setup instead. Main menu doesn't work in several game titles, starting a new game in Lords of the Fallen was really hard because they expect you to hold down the menu button. Which is something I can't do.

FWIW, the somewhat-misleadingly-named General Discussion subforum here dates back to when the only Steam Link option was the actual hardware Steam Link; there's a separate subforum for tvOS/iOS at https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/7/

Beyond that -- I assume when you talk about the controller test, you mean the Settings -> Controller, Test Controller screen in Steam Link itself?

Do you know which model specifically of Xbox controller you were trying? If you grab one of the (many, many) free game controller tester apps out of the App Store, do you see the same behavior of the buttons there, or is it only in the Steam Link app?
Testing the buttons using a tester app is a good idea, however I can only find one: Gamepad Test by Native IT, which is not free sadly. I have tested two different controllers, my main one is Elite Series 2, and the second one is Xbox One(?) controller. Not sure which exact model the latter one is but its "official" Microsoft product, not third party.

Edit: yes I think I mean that Steam Link menu.

Also if I connect the controller to my computer, I can run the button test on Steam in Desktop mode. In this mode the button behaves as expected, it can be pressed and held down without issues.
Yeah, my thought is not that the controller is broken, but rather that I wonder if the Apple TV is now grabbing the menu button for something system-wise, and thus the app is not getting what it would expect when the button is pressed; I don't have an Apple TV here right at the moment to test with, but I vaguely recall the Menu button being grabbed by tvOS to take you to the task switcher on a long press.

Which is why I thought checking with one of the gamepad tester apps wouldn't be a bad idea... if it's the OS-level handling of the button doing something unexpected, you'd see it there. Disappointing that there are so many free gamepad tester apps for the iPhone/iPad, and just one paid one for tvOS.

At any rate, I do have an Apple TV at home and can pair an Xbox Elite series 2 with it when I get home to see if I see the same behavior or not. (I *did* pair a controller with my iPhone here and the Menu button works as expected.)
I find it surprising if nobody else has seen this problem. It must be software related, either AppleTV itself or the Steam Link app I'm guessing. The "double actuation" behavior doesn't seem to matter in all games, I can play some some of them without issues. Pretty sure it hasn't always been like this. If I only knew what changed :(
This is fixed for the next update, thanks!
This is great news! Thank you!
