I am not getting the remote mapped properly with CEC. CEC is detected and activated (I can see this on the TV itself as CECTester). The buttons however do nothing and give me the following error in the terminal :
Error: Can't open display: (null)
Failed creating new xdo instance

OS: Retropie Stretch
Device : Raspberry Pi3B+

Oh yeah, the current CEC support only works on X11.

This now works on the console in today's beta update.

Does that mean Steam Link can run without an X server, and does that help improve performance?

It can run without an X server on Raspberry Pi 3, but must run under X on Raspberry Pi 4, because of the way the graphics stack is set up. Video decode bypasses the X server and performs the same both ways.

I know it's not the place to ask, but I'm quite exhausted with googling, so I'll try my luck - could you point me to how do we enable HEVC on Pi 4? I'm running Raspbian on it as of now

in the link app's advanced settings there is an option to enable HEVC. if you're looking for other than with the link app, don't know where to send you other than back to google.

well, the problem is that SteamLink App says to me that HEVC is "unavailable" and I cannot figure out why exactly is that. So I'm asking around whenever people mention that =)

have you run the 'sudo apt update' and 'sudo apt upgrade' commands in a terminal session with the pi? it doesn't auto-update like windows does, maybe one of the updates adds HEVC function.

oh, I've tried that and not only that =)

So, do I understand correctly - you have a Pi 4 and your steam link app allows you to "Enable" the HEVC option? Could you share output of "uname -a" from your Pi 4 please?

edit: in the following thread, they said they had to install a couple lib files. maybe they can specify which ones. https://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/6/2260186248408081897/#c2260186248410100076

Thank you for following up with me =)
I've just find my mistake - I did not switch to beta build in the steam link app. I did check version of my app - it was 1.1.61.156, so I thought I'm good to go. Yet in fact I had to use the "Switch to Beta build" button anyways even though the version stayed the same. Now I can enable HEVC, so I have something to spend another evening fiddling with =)
