How To Guide: Xbox one wireless adapter working with Steam link
Items Needed:
-Steam link
- *EXTRA CONRTOLLER, Steam, PS4, XBOX one (needs a detachable USB cable) *
-Xbox one adapter
-Xbox one controller
-Virtualhere

***Virtual Here has changed it is no longer free and can be pruchased through Steam(12/29/2016)****

Steps
- Pre-sync the Xbox one adapter with the controller at your host pc and then disconnect from usb once synced.

- Attach the Xbox one adapter to the steam link but DO NOT TURN ON the xbox one controller just yet.

- Insure that the EXTRA controller is attached via usb cable and can be unplugged from the controller itself.

-Turn on the steam link

-On the host pc run VirtualHere and select the XBOX ACC. It should now say "in use by you"

-On the steam link navigate to the game you wish to play using the EXTRA controller, once the game is started up unplug the EXTRA controller and use the same cable that it was attached to attach to the xbox one controller to the steam link.

- FOR STEAM CONTROLLERS, WAIT FOR THE STEAM CONTOLLER TO TURN OFF

-The xbox one controller should be able to control the game at this point. If so unplug the xbox one controller and hit the "home button" to link it to the xbox one adapter.

That should be it the controller should now work flawlessly as long as the steam controller does not come back on.

- Know issue - wired Xbox one fallout 4 controller will not work as the "extra" controller.

*Edited from just steam controller to "extra" controller.

*******(Update 12/29/2016) The new Xbox One controllers no longer need the Xbox dongle and can connect to the steam link via Bluetooth. Just hit the sync button on the xbox one controller will in the bluetooth settings on the steam link and add the controller (additional device required in order to navigate menus).

I have attempted (with no luck) various other programs for USB over network but the best bet is really virtual here, though it is a shame it is no longer free for one USB device.

You can also turn off input forwarding in the advanced streaming settings on the Steam Link so that you don't have to turn off your Steam Controller.

Does anybody know if it is possible to connect more than one Xbox One Controller with the wireless adapter using Virtualhere?

I am having a constant issue with VirtualHere trying to get this to work with my Xbox One Wireless Adapter. I followed slouken's steps, however when I right click "XBOX ACC" and click "Use", it says VirtualHere will install some drivers, I click "OK" and it never works. I get an error saying the VirtualHere drivers could not be loaded and I get this pop-up info:

10:20:29 INFO :VirtualHere Client 3.4.2 starting (Compiled: Feb 10 2016 22:26:27)
10:20:29 INFO :Using config at C:\Users\@@@@\AppData\Roaming\vhui.ini

10:21:54 INFO :No drivers found, they will be installed
10:21:58 ERROR :Execution of command 'C:\Users\@@@@\AppData\Local\Temp\vh32521\vhdrivers.exe /Q' failed (error 0: the operation completed successfully.)

Happens every time. Any help would be extremely appreciated because I would love to use my Xbox One controller wirelessly on Steam Link!

- First try starting the client with the -3 argument "Vhui64.exe -3"

- Did you install the Xbox wireless adapters drivers on the pc prior to using it on the steam link?

- Try re-installing Virtualhere.

Do I need to do this every time I want to start up a different game, or the Steam Link itself?
Or is this a one-time thing and after that, I can use the Xbox One Wireless Controller as if it were a Steam Controller?
Somatix Mar 27, 2016 @ 10:21am
I'm curious about the above questions as well.

What is the expected behavior after doing the steps above when switching games or when turning on/off the steam link?

Do some of these steps have to be done each time or will it work like a traditional wireless controller from that point on?
Cap'nDippy Mar 28, 2016 @ 11:12am
Just do most of it once and it should be fine, you will need to do the (On the host pc run VirtualHere and select the XBOX ACC. It should now say "in use by you") step everytime.

The controller will act fine from there on out as a normal steam controller would navigating and playing just as long as Virtualhere is running.

Will this setup also allow a Chatpad and/or Headset connected to the controller to work correctly?

Got this to work on my first try, played for a few minutes. Came back later that day did the same steps and nothing :( Virtualhere just wont find my steam link again. Tried it 20x already.

Same to me, seems like Valve & VirtualHere are working together, because there is now a full-version of VirtualHere for Steam Link available in the steam store (20 $)
this one supports up to 3 gadgets
Free-version could only support 1
TOAST Jun 15, 2016 @ 3:46pm
seems like the free version doesn't work anymore.

Installed just now. Can't believe how easy this was...and how much I was missing. $3 incredibly well spent.

Just a follow-up for anyone reading this thread.

The Xbox One Chatpad and headsets do work when used with the Xbox One Wireless Adapter through VirutalHere.
