Steam Link

TV won't turn on if Steam Link is plugged in
So here's a weird thing I noticed today with my Vizio TV. I got a phone call from my wife that our TV wasn't powering on. I get home, and can't get it to turn on either. I tried power cycling the TV, leaving it unplugged, etc. and nothing worked. Finally I decided to unplug the Steam Link I just bought since it was the last thing I bought and plugged in. I power cycled the TV again and the TV turned on again. I plugged the link back in and went on my merry way thinking it was a one time thing, but this morning it happened again and I unplugged the link and it worked again. Tried this two more times and it still happened. Did I just get a bad Steam Link?

No. I believe there is an advanced feature on your tv that is interfering with the signaling on the steam link. I can't say which because I don't own a Visio. Others in the forums have had your issue with newer tvs.

I have the exact same issue with my steam link and vizio e55-c2. Help?!

Now this is only a wild guess but it sounds like the Link screws up the HDMI CEC communication between it and the TV. CEC is what (normally) makes the Link start up the TV and switch to the correct input channel when you turn it on.

What happens when you turn the Link on after it has gone to sleep/been turned off?

I have the CEC on my TV off.

Okay... maybe that's the issue? Have you tried enabling it to see what happens?

Just my two cents, we are having the SAME issue with a Vzio E65X-C2. Kind of a bummer :/

I'm having the exact same issue with a Vizio 65" smart TV. I don't believe it's the CEC because I use a Raspberry Pi with RasPlex installed and the CEC works perfectly with that. If I have the steam link plugged in to the TV, I have to unplug it and unplug/replug in the TV power cable in order to get it to turn on.

Just FYI. Valve don't monitor these threads so if you find a legitimate issue (like you seem to have done in this case), then open an official support ticket.

I have the same issue here as well. My TV is a Vizio E55-C2 smart TV. I've tried CEC enabled, disabled, and arc only to no avail. It seems like this is an issue with Vizio TVs. I found another smaller thread where people with Vizio TVs have the same issue. My friend has a Samsung Smart TV and he said there were no issue on his end.

I have already submitted a ticket with support so we'll what happens.

I had a similar issue (all of my tvs are vizio smart) but have since sorted it out.
Do not disable CEC, Do try a different HDMI port.
If the issue continues make sure to switch the input channel before turning off the TV to another device.
If yet again it still continues the I'm out of ideas as switching to a different port fixed my issues.

I want to +1 this: my Vizio TV is also interacting badly with the Steam Link. It's probably Vizio's problem (as no malfunctioning device should be able to keep the TV from turning on), but this may unfortunately be a limitation of the CEC protocol, so Steam should figure out what's triggering it and play better with the Vizio. After all, no other device I've ever had hooked up to this TV triggers this problem.

I have a smart 47in and smart 24in Visio. Not having this problem.

Which port had issues? What model of Vizio TV do you have? Does the issue happen with all of your TVs?

Adding my Vizio TV to the mix. My model is E320FI-B2. Things I've tried:

Updated Steam Link to latest version.
Updated Vizio TV to latest firmware.
Disabled CEC on the TV.
Enabled CEC on the TV.
Plugged in the Steam Link to a different HDMI port on the TV.
Made sure Steam Link is not the active device ont he TV before powering off.
Made sure Steam Link *IS* the active device on the TV before powering off.
Powered off Steam Link before the TV.
