Launch non-steam games with black screen
ok,I've tried many method which I search on google and steam forum,but I still have this problem,hope anyone can give me more solutions:

I got a problem when I try to use Steam Link to streaming my living room's TV to play non steam games, it happens after I upgrade my OS from Windows 8 to 8.1.

The problem is that it will show black screen on TV when I try to open non steam games on my desktop with FullScreen mode, both the game's audio and my controller works good , but the screen is just all black so that I can't see anything on TV. But my computer's LCD shows good ,it won't be black screen like TV.
I try to run the game with Windowed mode(Alt+Enter) , it won't black screen anymore on my TV but it lost many FPS.
I also change my Steam Version from Public to Beta Version and Run as Administrator,it still black screen on my living room TV.

Further,I try to add the non steam games into my Steam's Library instead of open it from Windows's Desktop directly,it works all good although it run with FullScreen mode but the controller settings will all be replaced,I can only change my Steam Controller's setting,I can't change my other controller's setting which I plug in Steam Link.

I reinstall my OS to Windows 7 64-bit,but the problem is still exist.
I also tried on my laptop(Windows 7 64-bit,too),it works perfect. It just have problem on my Desktop Computer.

I don't know what happened to my Desktop Computer..help me please

OS:Windows 8.1 Professional
CPU:Intel i5-2400 @ 3.1GHz
Graphic card:NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
Graphic card's Driver Version:GeForce 361.43 WHQL(Newest Version)
LCD: Acer GD245HQ-24 inch monitor
Resolution:1920*1080 (32 bit)
Steam Client:opt into beta version

Hi,

does it happen to you in all games?

I had this issue once, in Witcher 3 when I enabled the game overlay DLC in GOG Galaxy (non steam game). After I disabled the game overlay I was able to stream again without any issues.

I read somewhere that there's some conflict between steam game overlay and some games overlay

Dolphin wanted to do the black screen thing until I messed with some window settings in the main menu.

Yes,it happen to all my non-steam games,black screen but I can hear the game's audio works.

the game is Stepmania , a music game. I can work with window mode too but it will lost many FPS(60 to 2x)

Hi GoodWorker

The black screen is happening because the game is running in full screen, if you run it in windowed/borderless window you should get pecture (don't know why, but I had the same experience).

The drop in FPS is probably because the gpu is maxed out, try disabling hardware encoding (when your logged on to your pc) and enabling hardware decoding (on the steam link).

The controller issue is because, it works like a mouse when your not in a game. This will also happen if you run a game that requires uplay.

Upgrade to windows 10 , probably wont fix your problem but Direct X 12 is only avalible on windows 10 so its kind of a no brainer.

I found they both have hardware encoding checkbox on PC and SteamLink,so I have to disable this on my PC and only enable this checkbox which is on SteamLink?

it's still a possible solution, I'll try it when theres no any other methods I can try.

In Big Picture mode you select settings (the gear thingy) -> in home streaming -> advanced host options. You should now be able to deselect hardware encoding for nvidia, amd and intel gpus. Changing these settings gave me a better fps.

yea I changed the settings, but it still work with low FPS,I think the vga card which is better than GTX570 can fix this problem(maybe 980Ti?)

ok,after hundreds of tries,I give it up.
seems theres nothing we can do until the offical developers fix this bug.
can't totally figure out that why I can't play non-steam games with fullscreen after I upgrade to 8.1.

Can you please post GameOverlayRenderer.log and logs\streaming_log.txt immediately after launching a non-Steam game? Also, what game are you trying to play?

I tried it one more time,but still got balckscreen and some logs in my streaming_log.txt,I didnt see any record in my GameOverlayRenderer.log after I started a non-Steam game.
how should I give my log file to you? can I post here directly?

No,it doesn't occur on Steam Games.

I used the Direct3D renderer instead of OpenGL. Might be due to the Steam Overlay messing with it.
I start Dolphin from command line directly into the game. It renders to main window (this is an option) and I made a controller shortcut to exit Dolphin.
I launch from EmulationStation, not sure if it works from BPM.

@slouken
I have this problem with The Crew, non-steam game through Uplay. It doesn't want to stay active in Steam because of the launchers it uses. Quite messy software if you ask me.
