Xbox One Controller not connecting to Steam Link

I just bought a Wireless Xbox One Controller and I can't connect it to my Steam Link. I go to settings Bluetooth and it shows up after I press the sync button on the controller. Steam Link says it's connected but the controller won't stop blinking after Steam Link says its connected. My steam link is updated to the latest version which is build 794. I updated my Wireless Xbox One Controller to the latest firmware version. I tried a factory reset but that didn't work at all. Can someone please tell me why I can't connect my Xbox Controller to my Steam Link?

## FIXED ##
It is a software issue, follow these steps to fix it:
- Plug the controller to your PC with a USB-C cable.
- Start the Xbox accessories app from Microsoft store
- Select the controller and Update the drivers.
- Pair your controller with Steamlink

I've followed these steps and my controller has been fully updated per the Xbox Accessories app, my Steam Link is build 844 (which is the latest beta as of this post) and the original issue persists: After pairing a Series X controller to the Steam Link, it continues fast-blinking and will not connect.

I wanted to add my experience using the Xbox One Series X Controller wirelessly.

For a while I had trouble successfully connecting / pairing my controller. For this reason, I bought the official Microsoft Xbox Bluetooth adapter to connect my controller. This worked alright for a while and I wasn't experiencing any input lag. However there are some caveats. The adapter didn't support rumble on the Steamlink. And later on the controller would randomly drop out in games, even on a good battery charge.

Recently though, I finally was able to pair to the Steamlink's built in Bluetooth. I think the trick was after pairing, I had to power down the controller by holding the Xbox button and power it back on. Now it works directly with the Steamlink and includes rumble.

The only downside is that once your turn the Steamlink off, it takes an eternity to turn the Steamlink back on with the Bluetooth controller. It takes well over a minute on my Steamlink for it to turn on by a signal from the Bluetooth controller. And once the Steamlink is on, I have to turn the controller off and on again.

To get around this, you need some device plugged into the Steamlink to quickly power it on. This could be something like a wired controller. In my case, I turn the Steamlink on with a wireless keyboard that's connected by a dongle. After that, I turn on my controller and everything is good to go.

Exact same experience here with adding a second controller wirelessly.
My first controller is an older Series S type. No issues at all with that one.

First I couldn't get the second controller connected at all, even after upgrading its firmware. I noticed the second controller all of a sudden got connected after powering it down and back up again.

Also the downside... Starting the Steamlink takes ages now, which controller I'm powering up first doesn't have any effect. With only the Series S connected there's no massive power-up delay.

It seems like they are trying get you to buy a steam deck by barley supporting remote play anymore. What a shame i love playing on tv

are you having problems pairing the controller with the link?
if it works in the link menus its working fine

if it does not work after connecting to the host, then its a controller mapping problem on the host

Hi Slouken. Thanks for asking about the vid/pid. Unfortunately I can not pair the new Microsoft wireless xbox core controller with my PC. I can't pair via Bluetooth nor with my brand new usb c cable. I posted a question on Amazon and got a corporate speak answer back. Contact xbox support. Yeah right. I'm returning the controller to Amazon. If someone else has gotten the new xbox wireless controller (with sharing button) to work with their pc, please tell me how. I'm not an idiot. Thanks.

If you can't use your Xbox controller with Windows it's possible that you have a defective unit.

Just to come back to an old thread. Still having this issue in 2023. All 3 BT compatible controllers won't pair to the steam link correctly. They all appear and pair but the controller continues to flash. The status said paired then flashes to connected back to paired and nothing will allow the controller to stay connected. Steam link is on the latest update.

You probably need to update the firmware on the controllers using an Xbox or the Xbox accessories app on a Windows PC.

I have the same problems..
I have 3 different Steam Links on 3 different TV's, each with 2 Xbox Series X Controllers.
The Controllers are up to date, the Steam Link is up to date. Game mode is on and I have a wired internet connection.
ALL my Xbox Series X controllers have connection issues.
Yeah, after a few minutes they work - but most of the time there is a big delay while playing with the Xbox Series X Controllers.
Sometimes Controller 1 worked fine while Controller 2 & 3 have a delay.
After a few restarts (sometimes it takes me 30 minutes because of the mentioned connection problems) all my controller work! It's gambling!
BUT every time I connect an old 360 Controller (with the BT dongle) this old controller work without problems! (fast connection - no delay!)

Till now I never used the wireless Adapter for windows 10.
I used this Adapter on my PC and I could test it.. But 3x 30€ for this adapter...
Any ideas for me?

you can have the pc dongles paired to 4 controllers at one time

my link hardware works fine with 3-4 controllers at the same time
x1s/x (bt) and x360 with ms x360 dongle

First review:
I am positively surprised!
I can connect all my 7 XBox Series X Controllers at the same time with my wireless adapter.
All controllers connect super fast and finally I am able to start my steam link with the guide button (-> last time this worked was with my 360 controller..) =)

BUT: yes, there is still a small delay. But for local play its not a big deal I guess.
(the delay was much worse without the wireless adapter)
AND I was able to play Pico Park with 7 controllers at the same time - wohoo!

But other games like Brawhalla doesn't work with Controller 5, 6 & 7.
I installed the "xbox extended feature support" in the steam settings, but that didn't help.
Any suggestions?

Controller firmware is fully up to date, no updates available to any of the controllers. The PS4, PS5, and some offbrand controllers I have pair just fine. Ended up grabbing another ps5 controller to get buy.

Try the wireless Adapter for windows 10 on the steam link. This will fix your connection problems. :)

OMG! it's working, Thank you! I have already tried to update it throught device manager in MS Windows. But did not know about the Xbox accessories app :D. Evidently Microsoft is not capable to update drivers there even for its own hardware... :D :D I had xbox controller from 2021 .

Yes thanks bro. It's refreshing to see someone honest about the issues steam link has. Literally all you can ever find is cope and no help to any issue. It's never the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ things fault. Everytime I start this thing it's 30 minutes of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around till it decided to work. It's just totally random. If it's not the controller, it's the stream connection, if it's neither of those it's a specific game not working correctly with inputs or some other super annoying issue. This thing is far from seamless. Ive had mine for over 3 years and I still have to ♥♥♥♥ with it every now and again just to get it to stream a simple game off the steam client from my pc to tv. If there wasn't so much cope going on in these types of forums when I was looking at buying it I would've just saved my money and got a really long hdmi cord and ran that ♥♥♥♥ through the house. Literally would've been easier than ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with this thing every time I want to use it.
