Steam Link

Steam Link

steam link sees gamecube controller hub as single controller instead of multiple
I have an evoretro gamecube controller adapter. The steam link works with it just fine, but recognizes it as only one controller rather than 4... every time I map one of the controllers connected to it in steam link controller config, it becomes the only controller that works... any workaround?

does the link menu show it as 4 controllers?

windows has a max of 4 controllers using xinput
if you have any controller plugged into the host directly when you begin streaming, 4 more will be added, breaking xinput for some of the controllers

check steam -> settings -> controller -> [general]
see if they are all listed, and give each an identifiable name (ex. link xbone white)
then when you map controls for bpm/desktop/chord/game you can see which controller you are changing

no, the link menu shows it as one controller, but any of the four can be mapped as the input for this one controller

similarly steam shows one generic controller when these are connected to the link, but whichever one is mapped works as expected in-game. All the x-input signals can be received on host just need to divide these into separate controllers, seems only a small tweak is needed.

i have tried without any other controllers on the host or link -- same result. Might try virtualhere as the host recognizes it as 4 when connected directly, though i'm hoping to avoid this

anyway thanks for reply!

can you plug the adapter into a pc and post the pid/vid
will help support add it to the link
Tekamthi Jan 11, 2021 @ 3:56pm
okay, its VID_0079 and PID_1846 (and REV_0100)

it shows up as 5 devices in windows device manager: usb input device (highlighted) & 4 "game controllers" shown here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/olq6coelok0gygt/GCdevicemgr.jpg?dl=0

the hardware ID screen for the usb input device is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/trynl334fiuqk4c/usbinputdevice.jpg?dl=0

the hardware ID screens for the 4 HID game controller devices are here:

the vendor link to the product's retail website is https://www.evoretro.com/collections/retro-gaming-accessories/products/4-pack-gamecube-controller-bundle-with-4-extension-cords-and-a-4-port-adapter-for-switch-pc

If it does get added to the link, it would make at least one kid (my step bro) super happy! Thanks again!

As a further note on this topic, there is a guide for a "mayflash" version of this gamecube adapter at https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam_Link/comments/5rjbfb/guide_using_a_gamecube_controller_with_a_mayflash/

in particular, that adapter is recognized as 4 input devices. See https://i.imgur.com/k6G4reb.jpg

the evoretro adapter shows up as just 1 input device, and just needs similar treatment from the link as the "mayflash" version. I imagine this would be a quick copy/paste job to fix. Thanks for considering.

We got it working great in beta 792! Thanks so much, he's really stoked to see this :)

quick update here... on the beta firmware (now 793) we've just noticed (firs time we've switched it back) that the evoretro adapter does not work well at all with the steam link when in pc (xinput) mode. 4 controllers show up but it makes the whole link connection unstable with lags, graphical glitching and disconnects.

That aside, can confirm after some extensive testing that the switch/wii u mode works perfectly with the link. Thanks again!

is it possible some recent update broke support for these adapters? The family member that was using this setup reports that the adapter no longer works with the steam link, sometime in the past year though he's not really sure when -- i ordered him another one and he reports its also not registering any input. I will eventually visit to check directly, but can only rely on his reports for now. He's not very technology-savvy, so its possible he is overlooking something, but I've tried to walk him through some troubleshooting on the phone and we can't get it going again, neither the old adapter nor the new
