Steam Link won't connect to Host PC
Hey, I've done a lot of digging through forums and support threads, as well as Steam's troubleshooting- And I'm still having trouble getting my Steam Link to recognize my PC. I have a wired connection running to my router, both on my computer and Link. I've tried using the Link's wireless connection, and it still won't recognize it. I've tried a whole bunch of troubleshooting and I still can't quite find a solution. If anyone knows anything that could help, I'd appreciate it!

I stole this from another thread, but

First 3 things to check:
-Have you enabled In-Home Streaming in the host PC?
-Do you have any kind of firewall running in the host PC that could be blocking the communication?
-Do you have a 2nd PC to try using as a Streaming client? this would allow you to isolate Steam Link specific issues.

I'm having the exact same issue--read every post I can get my hands on and then some--and I still can't get it to connect. If you ever figure this out I'd love to know how!

You need to make sure the Steam Link and the PC are on the same subnet.

Normally the IP address of the Steam Link and the PC will look the same except for the last number, for example 192.168.1.x.

If your PC and Link IP addresses have more than the last number different, then you probably have multiple routers or multiple subnets in your home network. You need to resolve this in such a way that the Link and PC are on the same subnet.

The most obvious way to do this is connect the Link and PC to the same router.

I know this thread is old, but maybe this will help someone out. I ran into the same problems, host pc wasn't connecting. I reset everything I could, changed settings, turned firewall on and off and to no avail. Still the same problem. Then I noticed that my PC's name was different than what it was on my Steam Link. I had installed a new SSD about a month back and hadn't gone to use my Link until today. So I changed the name of my PC to what is was on my Link and it worked instantly. I have no idea why, but it did. So for anyone else having the same problem, check to see if you PC name matches up to what is on your Link. I was about to tear my hair out.

Hey thanks @Cake! I had the same problem after installing an SSD.

My computer name was still the same, but turned out all I needed to do was run another search for my computer to let the Link refind it.

I was super frustrated! Especially because it could see my roommate's PC, so I knew the issue likely wasn't the Link itself.

tl;dr: Try doing another search for your PC, especially if you just installed a new hard drive

Thanks @messyjesse80 that exactly solved my problem. The internet at my place from the cable modem goes right into an adapter plugged into an AC outlet in one room that make all the AC outlets of the rest of the house an access point. A second room has my computer in it and I have an adapter on an AC outlet there then connected to a router before it hits my computer. I also have the big screen tv in another room which has the same set up an adapter from the AC outlet plus a router. Steam should actually have a pop up on the steam link that states the issue about the subnet. Thanks so much.

I was trying it, I tested it many times. The problem is that streaming doesn't work in Windows Server 2008R2, but work perfectly on Windows 7 and Windows 10. But all other steam features works just well on Server 2008R2.

and no errors in logs at all

most likely windows firewall in server 2008

No it's not firewall, it's something in Windows server 2008. Some feature. I tried it in clean machine without firewall also.

Steam support said they won't support me when I use Windows Server , so I was forced to replace it with Windows 10.
I don't know if the problem exists on Windows Server 2008 only or on later Server builds too - never tested.
