Xbox 360 Controller - problems when pair 2 controller
hey there,

as the topic says.
When im in big picutre mode and as soon as i pair my second xbox360 controller to steam link the follow happens....
Controller 1 is still paired, but when i move to any direction wirh my arrows or the stick, it directly hits twice. i cant do a single click to any direction. there are no problems with the action buttons btw.
Controller 2 seems to be paired correctly as 2, but nothing happens. i cant move or click anything

im using the wireless adapter from for xbox360 controller from microsoft.
the adapter is shared by virutal here. this seems to be important to avoid the problem that controllers will identified as mouse+keyboard on 3rd party games like FIFA 17
steam is running on beta mode as well as the steam link (build 600)
on controllerconfiguration only xbox360 assistent is active

thats what i tried to resolve it:
- turn on the controller on steamlink, befor im conncted to the host pc
- wait till big picture is online before i turn on the controller (used a small BT keyboard to join host pc)
- used a second xbox controller adapter so that each controller has its own adapter
- point 1,2 and 3 with and without virtual here

any ideas?

Patience my friend!

Some threads need some time to be recognized. I hope, all of my threads will also receive some attention, but they didn't (at least not all of them).

Next thing: Not everyone owns and uses two wireless Xbox 360 gamepads on a Steam Link. Gladly I am one of a small amount of people out there who also owns two wireless gamepads so I tried to reproduce the issue.

I have the same problem. After I switched on my second controller, every single button press on my first gamepad hits two times. The second controller does not work at all (but it is connected).

If I switch off my first gamepad (the second one is still switched on), the behaviour continues. But now I am able to navigate through the interface with the second gamepad. If I switch on my first gamepad I am not able to use it, but the second gamepad still works (two hits issue continues).

If I now switch off both gamepads and connect the second one first, I can navigate through the interface as intendet. If I now switch on my first controller, the issue will start again (one press -> two hits; second connected gamepad does not work).

Additional advice: I am NOT using VirtualHere (gamepad does work for non-Steam games flawlessly as long as you add it to the Stam library and configure the controller for the game).

I hope this isse will get some attention because I am not sure how the issue behaves in some two player games.

Best regards

Okay, I took my time and tried both gamepads with a two player game (Dolphin Emulator -> Mario Galaxy -> 2 Player Mode)

Both gamepads are working independently in the game. But if you are pressing the Xbox button and the Steam overlay appears the two hits issue appears. Seems definitely a problem of the Steam overlay and the Big picture mode with two connected Xbox 360 gamepads (maybe the same for other gamepads too).

If I navigate with the gamepads through my Steam library (desktop streaming) everything is working fine (no two hits issue).

Thanks for your help Koala.
And sorry.... You were Right. I was a bit impatient.

Well, back to topic.
Everything is working Perfect as Soon as im in a Game.
It seems to be That its just the Big picture Mode wich make problems.

I tried to Change my 2x Xbox 360 Controller to my ps3 Controllers (4x) which works perfect even in the big picture Mode.

3rd Party Games - here its FIFA 17 on Origin - also working perfect with both configurations, as soon as i strat them with Steam.

No problem mate ;)

As long as both Xbox 360 gampepads are working flawlessly while gaming, this seems just a minor issue.

I was wondering, what is happening if you have connected four Xbox 360 gamepads and you try to navigate through the big picture mode? A four times hit with each button press?

I have the same problem, but with 2 wired Xbox One controllers. In any Steam menu any directional input is counted twice - so in game when it asks for keyboard input and you get the steam keyboard, you can only select every second letter that shows up on the keyboard. This only happens on the two wired Xbox One controllers, and not on an Xbox One S (bluetooth) controller, or a steam controller.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the naming of the controllers within Steam - as these two controllers both have the same name (I just left it at the default), and the other two are unique. I'll have to check that out tomorrow.

Same problem as rev_rez. I went and got 2 extra xbox one controllers to play with 4people yesterday. 2 controllers work fine, after the 3rd controller is connected it skips every 2nd menu option and controllers do not work in-game (genital jousting). All controllers are connected through usb. Problem occurs when connected through a usb hub as wel as direct connection on the 3 steamlink ports as well. Hopefully someone knows a solution...

Also tried the naming option, didn't work for me...
Rev_Rez Feb 25, 2017 @ 6:21pm
The problem seems to happen with two of any controller - they get detected as the same controller within steam. So, two One S controllers and I have the issue. Two wired xbone controllers and I have the issue. They all work fine within the games - but it can make navigating the menus very challenging.

Yeah, noticed it too. I named the 2 xbox controllers separately, then added a wired Xbox 360 controller and it worked with 3 players. Need to find another non-xbox one controller to figure out if 4player would also work, but i guess it does.

I'm having the same exact issue that Apollon347 and Rev_Rez. I'm using two wireless Xbox 360 controllers connected via dongle. I've been having controller problems ever since the update that lets Xbox controllers act like Steam Controllers. Its affecting my Xbox One controllers too.

Hi all,

I also experience the same issues as already mentioned. I've found that it works flawlessly if I un-check 'Xbox Controller' within controller settings and have Steam client think I'm using a generic Xinput controller.

This of course prevents you from using custom controller configurations though!

I just switch between the two dependant on whether I'm playing single or multiplayer.

This should be fixed in the latest Steam client beta (dated March 15th or newer)

So, updating the client on my computer to the beta will fix the probem on my Link? Or do I need to update the Link as well?

You just need to update the client on your computer.
