1) Connect controller via bluetooth in switch mode.
2) Plug it in via usb while it's still connected via bluetooth.
3) Play around in steam big picture while it's still connected via usb (it should work).
4) While the controller is still on, just disconnect the usb cable
5) It should switch right over to bluetooth again BUT steam recognizes it and you can use it via bluetooth!
It also seems to survive the computer restarting, so there shouldn't be another need to redo this process (unless it gets removed from bluetooth or something).
I'm trying to use this as a small HTCP remote and it's working okay-ish with steam, but I haven't figured out how to make it wake the computer, nor am I able to interact with the login screen *sigh*
It seems to be working otherwise but I'll try to report back if it goes badly.
I wish there was just a very reputable gyro enabled way to interact with a PC.
*edit: like a Steam Controller 2.0 that is more like the Steam Deck ... Maybe a Steam "Deckpad" or something ... one can hope! I love the Steam controller, but they won't last forever so I'm reticent to use it except for some cases.
Very welcome, glad it got working!
I later figured out this is likely an 8bitdo bug since it also impacts DS4Windows. I worked around it by pairing the controllers, and then repeatedly switching between D and S mode. Eventually the controller connects to the PC properly and Steam detects it.
The USB connection trick however seems more reliable, will have to try that next time
