Step 2: Never look back.
Step 3: Regret not doing it sooner.
i don't know whats wrong with you and batteries or how long your gaming sessions are but my xbox 360 wireless gamepads are powered by 2x AA size batteries (RECHARGABLE ONES, see amazon basics for that) and i can game for more then a week with one charge...
if my battery dies, i just hook those 2 up to my charger and play with another pair of AAs... no downtime, no store trips midnight etc.
i had a gamepad with integrated rechargable batteries before and downside is, it's either on "cooldown" when you are charging it or you have to play wired for the time charging.
People complain about everything on these forums, like Valve owes them something. If there is something you don't like, don't buy it and stop whinning like privlidged first-world idiots. The world wasn't made for your sole pleasure.
By that I mean, companies, users, modders etc can aquire the barebones and create / add features to it as they please. This wont be solely tied to valve, this is just the first wave of multiple posibilities so that valve can initially "get it right" for what they envision. Eventually they will open up specifications for third-party controllers to be developed.
You could also just buy 4 to always have a set of AAs available... nothing wasteful there and actually much more enviromental friendly than a rechargable lithium ion pack which would also be much more expensive to buy a second one for the 24/7 usage.
Guess the reason it's not part of the main product is the price tag, 50 bucks already isn't cheap and that would've probably been enough to push it out of the acceptable price range for many players out there.
Valve knows the market and may very well be the company with the best market insight in this industry, they know what people are willing to pay.
On top of that, it would change the price of the controller because they would have to manufacture these batteries specific to the controller.
all these people talking about what they like best...
but you're right.... soon there will be options to please them all...
the NYKO charging stand for me... when it comes out....
