Rechargable Battery Pack for Controller
The idea of powering this controller with AA batteries is a major turn off for me. I had to deal with that while using my first xbox 360 gamepad for windows. Couldn't stand it. I game for long durations in single sessions. Please Valve look into making a rechargeable USB compatible battery pack for when the controller battery dies and we can't make that trip to the store at 2am in the morning.

Use rechargeable AA batteries. This is better than a proprietary battery back.

A pack of 16 rechargable AA batteries and a charger will only cost you about 36$ on amazon. Thats enough for 8 controllers at once and they can be used for other controllers and future devices.

Step 1: Buy a pack of Sanyo Eneloops with the four-channel charger from Amazon.
Step 2: Never look back.
Step 3: Regret not doing it sooner.

I would have preferred usb rechargable, but AA's aren't a big deal. Just buy a 48 pack of AA's on Amazon for $14. That is 24 x 80 hours = 1920 hours of gaming for $14 in batteries.

If they don't do it because it will burn too big a hole in the companie's pocket I wouldn't be too disappointed. I'm just saying it's one of my preferences and maybe a lot of other people's and may be worth looking into. Whatever they decide to do, the controller looks siiick.

i don't know whats wrong with you and batteries or how long your gaming sessions are but my xbox 360 wireless gamepads are powered by 2x AA size batteries (RECHARGABLE ONES, see amazon basics for that) and i can game for more then a week with one charge...

if my battery dies, i just hook those 2 up to my charger and play with another pair of AAs... no downtime, no store trips midnight etc.

i had a gamepad with integrated rechargable batteries before and downside is, it's either on "cooldown" when you are charging it or you have to play wired for the time charging.

It just seems like a waste to me. All the material for 36 AA batteries or rechargeable batteries (batteries + charging station) vs a compact USB rechargable pack? I understand it's simple to acquire mass amounts of AA batteries or rechargeable ones but if you don't need to, why should you?

So go buy recharable batteries!

People complain about everything on these forums, like Valve owes them something. If there is something you don't like, don't buy it and stop whinning like privlidged first-world idiots. The world wasn't made for your sole pleasure.

Eventually someone will provide a recargeable battery pack, people are forgetting one key aspect of this controller, It will eventually be open for anyone to tweak.

By that I mean, companies, users, modders etc can aquire the barebones and create / add features to it as they please. This wont be solely tied to valve, this is just the first wave of multiple posibilities so that valve can initially "get it right" for what they envision. Eventually they will open up specifications for third-party controllers to be developed.

The store page said "wired or wireless (dual mode).'' If your batteries die and you don't have backups, plug the dang thing in.

I'm lucky to have Rechargable AA batteries, But a USB Charger pack also sounds cool to have.

You could also just buy 4 to always have a set of AAs available... nothing wasteful there and actually much more enviromental friendly than a rechargable lithium ion pack which would also be much more expensive to buy a second one for the 24/7 usage.

Guess the reason it's not part of the main product is the price tag, 50 bucks already isn't cheap and that would've probably been enough to push it out of the acceptable price range for many players out there.
Valve knows the market and may very well be the company with the best market insight in this industry, they know what people are willing to pay.

Although a proprietary batter may be better for life, and easy replacement after charging. I think the problem they were faced with was whether they wanted to have a proprietary battery that you can only get through valve, as oppose to batteries that can be found anywhere.

On top of that, it would change the price of the controller because they would have to manufacture these batteries specific to the controller.

If it's anything like the Xbox or PS or Wii controller there's a battery pack that fits in it. Nyko or some other third party manufacturer will eventually make a rechargeable battery pack.
