It's some new, advanced type of Bluetooth, according to Valve.
Each controller is supposed to come with a USB bluetooth adapter, and each adapter is able to handle up to 16 controllers at once.
Yeah, I heard there's three different conectivity modes on it. There's the Steam Wireless dongle mode, Bluetooth mode (It's believed you can use the controller on a tablet), and a wired mode for when you don't have any batteries.
so its like logitechs new mouse that does both unifying and bluetooth, if its that im happy. ofcorce id rather it works with logitechs thing so i have one less dongle on my pc
As an owner, i confirm that steam controller DOES support Bluetooth. The dongle is a simple wireless dongle for devices which dont support Bluetooth. Also, of u r out of batteries, u can simply use the cable which is in the controller's box.

NO!!! It is a low layency proprietary Bluetooth dongle and only works with SC

What Elwood said. While it is Bluetooth, it's a modified proprietary version. You need to use the included dongle for the SC to work wirelessly. Each dongle supports up to 4 controllers.

What crack you smoking dude? intentionally misleading people. save this ♥♥♥♥ for 4chan and not steam, go troll elsewhere.

Trucker and Elwood are right. NOT Bluetooth compatible and only 4 controller supported per dongle.
4 controller owner here to confirm the dongle is the primary source.

Can't see it otherwise. (Under Bluetooth devices)

doesn't need extender, though. Think wireless mouse (non-Bluetooth) with a free extender. Practical, not necessary.

Get a male to male MicroUSB to whatever-you-have cable and play wired, or get an adapter and go off of USB for wireless.
Again to confirm as an owner
1 the dongle it come with ONLY supports steam controllers according to valve it is supposed to be super low latency and offer the best experience.
2 the controller does support bluetooth i have connected it to my laptop in such a manner it seems to work just as well as the dongle
3 when they designed this thing they should have made a spot on the controller to put the dongle and a case to put the controller in as a accessory would be nice
Thank you so much for confirming that. I think I'll get on. Fair point I guess on latency but I think it might be just Bluetooth low energy which I understand has a lower latency

You are saying you have used a normal off the shelf Bluetooth adapter to connect it? How, pray tell, would you make it discoverable. My curiosity is peaked now....
Tomiri, you are the first person to report making a successful standard BT link with the controller. This is surprising, as the SC is not supposed to be BT compatible and does not advertise itself for pairing. Can you tell us what BT chipset you are using, and the OS and driver version for BT? I expect everyone else is damn curious as to how you've managed this. I certainly am.

OP, don't bank on this working with standard BT. Tomiri's experience appears highly idiosyncratic at this point. Without further info and the ability to replicate his experience, this currently must be considered as an X-File. We'll see what Mulder & Scully can make of it. It could be aliens.

It's NEVER aliens until it is... :steamhappy:
I have had to investigate UFOs for a (non-US) government before now. I only mention this because, well, if you could you would, right? Just call me Mulder. I can assure you, it's always weather balloons... :)~
