I'm very interested in using a steam controller on PS4, trackpad would be much more comfortable for playing shooter games compared to an analog stick :)
From what I've gathered, the SC will only output very specific keyboard and mouse settings if it's not connected to an OS running Steam. Therefore I suspect it WILL work a PS4 but it will ONLY work as a keyboard / mouse right now. Ps4 natively supports mouse and keyboard, but only in the Internet browser and in games that the developers have written specific support (aparently it's not uncommon). The other option is buying a hardware device that converts a keyboard and mouse input into a gamepad output... Such as this: https://www.iogear.com/product/GE1337P/ Although I can not speak to its efficacy.
Theoretically Valve could incorporate gamepad drivers / firmware of some sort directly into the hardware, instead of running the xinput from a steam driver in the os. Or 3rd parties (PlayStation) might develop drivers for their own OS (unlikely I'd guess). There is an open source 3rd party driver in development for Linux, that's the only one I know.
Besides, you'd need to run some kind of modified software or an USB addon that converts SC output to what PS4 can recognise, and even then i think the trackpad would behave like an analog stick because PS4 can't recognise any other type of input other than analog...
EDIT: Read the post above me, didn't know it can recognise keyboard inputs. Still, it's very limited in what SC inputs are by default, and what games that support this feathre require. For instance, by default, you have arrow keys, scroll and L/R mouse click and some other stuff, but if the game requires WASD and SC doesn't have that by default no amount of converting will help that, because those outputs aren't there.
Also, 2 months is not nearly enough time to even try to do something like this. Give it time, maybe someone is already working on some hack...
The analog stick outputs keyboard arrow keys by default. The steam dongle is universal I think, so I might work if it's paired in advance (it does on an android and iOS phone). The ps4 recognises all standard mouse and keyboard inputs, so that shouldn't be a problem. Tethered via usb is almost certain to work.
Yeah, i edited my previous post when i read what you wrote.
Still, outside of steam, by default, SC has a limited set of possible key outputs. So if the game uses anything else, you're out of luck...
I also doubt that Sony will enable SC compatibility. They have to sell their own controllers after all...
Yep. 👍 It would probably be asking a lot, but it would be dang cool if the SC somehow kept its last settings in internal memory so you could configure it in Steam and then plug it into another 'unsupported' device to use. It sounds tricky to me, due to all the options we are given in Steam.
It only needs somekind of usb converter between PS4 and SC plus new software for SC
Of course not now but someday in the future. Only time will tell.
There's more relevant threads to necro with this kind of questions, and there is also a big FAQ that answers every question about the steam controller. Next time read the FAQ first, or post your question in the pinned FAQ thread.
As for your question. Yes, it works with non-steam PC games as well. You just have to add them to the Steam library and run them from there.
CronusMAX PLUS
With a steam controller, it may not matter, and both will probably give you a better experience. (though neither are 'plug and play')
From what I've been reading the cronusmax is slightly more responsive (10ms vs 30ms) but the XIM4 is far better at 1:1 movements, and feels more natural. This is because the xim4 actually takes your movements and smooths them out. before directing them at the ps4.
It should be noted that a XIM4 is about twice the price though.
