Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Steam Controller PS4 Compatibility
I currently have a ps4 and I often struggle playing FPS games that use the analog sticks. Assuming that this controller is revolutionary, I will pick it up IF it works for the ps4.

PS4's work with stock PC controllers. The Steam Controller can set up to work as a stock PC controler with thumbpad emulation on the aiming trackpad.

The question comes down to, is the thumbpad emulation done in the Steam Controller itself or is it done with the PC drivers? If the emulation is done at the controller, then the Steam Controller should work with a PS4.

We'll know soon enough, Steam Controllers are shipping out to the earliest pre-orders. Some people even have one already. All it takes is one person to try.

Wut?
Youre not asking the right question Burrito, before even wondering if on which side the work's done, you have to ask yourself if the work can even BE done.

A steam controller defaults to a KB/M without steam, and steam's required to even activate the joystick mode on the trackpad.

The assumption is that one of two things happens when Steam does that.

1. The driver changes a setting in the controller
2. The driver changes a setting in the driver

It is also assumed that anyone interested in doing this will bother to have a PC with Steam installed so that they can change settings on the controller.

Personally, I assume it's done on the driver level. It would be the easiest way to handle it. You can smooth out turn acceleration and dead zones on a game by game basis that way.

Like I said, we'll know soon enough.

Try pluggin in a 360 controller in a PS4, it works just fine. As does the 4 year old PoS controller I have in my house.

Sony's consoles aren't as closed as you think they are. Fun fact, Sony allows off the shelf components to be used in their consoles, allows cross platform games with PC, and allows games to use KB/M for controls.

Well wether or not the steampad can save profile on itself has always been a pretty big debate in these forum, but now that you brought it up, its easy for me to ask cerberus to just check it out.

edit : i asked cerberus while typing this message and he answered after i posted lol. He hasent done the full range of test but is preliminary ones resulted in the steampad defaulting to KB/M in the absence of SteamOS. So for now its not promising

I would like to hear the response from the developers about this, because if it's going to work with it a lot uvelisit ps4 sales and many will take it in the notes of the conventional controller ps4
I'm still skeptical about a 360 controller or any other PC controller being able to plug in and work on a PS4. Not without some kind of middleware translating them to PS4 inputs, at least. I have seen no evidence of this being possible.

But IF that is true, and if the PS4 works fine with keyboard and mouse in games (not just for web browsing or navigating the OS), then technically yes the Steam Controller should be able to hook up and work as a basic keyboard and mouse. But you won't be able to configure it or take any kind of advantage that it has in customization options.

They can't justify releasing such a controller for console as they would have to either give 2 controllers for everyone or make games steam controller exclusive.

Put 2 people of same skill against eachother with a steam and ps4 or xbox controller and the console controller player would be wrecked.

Xpadder already showed us you don't need to adjust drivers to make a 100% custimizable controller with endless keymapping in 1 configuration.

I played games where I had up to 30 different keybindings on my 360 controller.

It really depends on how much freedom they want you to have. And Sony doesn't want you to have any...programming a ps controller is a lot harder than a xbox controller even from a developper point of view. I'm not sure why they choose it to be like that but it is what it is.

It is a pity, and I wanted to buy this controller to replace dualshok4, and the current I see no reason to take it for PC games.:steamsad:

On the xim forums they mentioned they want to get it working but Valve won't work with them to get a proper driver created. Hopefully they can make it work.
Well it does just send standard keyboard and mouse input outside of Steam, so it should "just work" for the most part. I haven't mapped out all the default keys yet, but I do know that the d-pad and stick both map to the arrow keys outside of Steam, so that may be an issue that would need a proper driver to resolve. I have no doubt if Valve doesn't provide it, someone will. And soon.

you might wanna delete those extra post.
And by the way, i doubt those third party converter thingy will work as easily, the steam controller's uniqueness comes from its 2 trackpads that imitates a mosue, and from its customization that is inherent and unique to SteamOS.

How would that translate to a console game who cant recognize mouse-type inputs ?
especially since with a console, you probably bought it with controllers already, to play games optimized for said controllers.

Id be very curious to know how someone would make a steam controller work on a console, cause on every "ware" level i can think of (hard/soft/firmware) im having a very hard time imagining it due to the very way the steam controller works

Just because you can't imagine/understand how it could work, doesn't mean that it wouldn't. They're simply inputs. So if you wanted to use the trackpads as if they were analog sticks, then you'd map the trackpad inputs as analog sticks... Seems pretty clear to me...

I doubt it, because that would give you a massive advantage over regular PS4 players.
They got rid of the PSMove for FPS because that also gave people that used it a huge advantage.

Analog sticks are terrible for aiming.

I can confirm that HID compliant controllers work just fine on the PS3. I use my USB Sega Saturn controller for all of my PS3 fighters. I don't own a PS4, but I doubt that Sony would remove that feature from the PS4, especially since they moved to make their console more like a PC by adopting the x86 architecture.

I can't comment on 360 controllers, because those are non-HID-compliant Micro$oft trash. (aka X-input)
