How to make Walking easier with Steam Input?
(I mean, walking with the Analog Stick of a regular controller. Is there a better forum for this question?)

• In basically every game, there only seems to be a tiny area that makes the character walk, after that everything already makes him run.
After the deadzone, it's like 5% for walking and 95% for running.
I wanted it to be ~80% for walk and the final ~20% for running.
What can I do with Steam Input?

The LOTS of things I tried with deadzones, response curves and sensitivity, seem to do nothing or completely make the characters only walk or only run.

The stick is fine, I've had this "problem" with other controllers (maybe I'm just bad at it with my left thumb), I even inverted the sticks and could control the camera with a lot more detail than I do the characters (I can find 3 to 5 different camera speeds).

I've had this same issue, where it is difficult to get a larger Walk area of the stick and a smaller Run area. Curious to see if anyone has solved this.

Is there only one walking speed?

I play a game where running is the normal way to get around, but walking is needed for a few things. I inverted the outer ring so that small thumb movements run but going around the edge of the trackpad walks. This probably only works with one walking speed.

I think the OP is referring to games with Analog movement on the stick, where a slight press causes the character to walk, and pressing further makes them run. The problem is the range for walking is tiny, even with adjustments to the acceleration etc.

I have also had this issue with no clear way to make it work nice.

This can be remedied in Steam Input. I'll describe a few more steps than you seem to need for other potential readers to make use of the method.

  1. Library (Steam pane)
  2. Right-click game
  3. Manage - Controller Layout (drop menu items)
  4. Select appropriate box for joystick (In this case second box from left, typically labeled Joystick Move)
  5. Additional Settings (button on far left near bottom)
  6. Stick Response Curve (Select list box under text, typically labeled "Linear")
  7. Select an option with the desired curve

For the specific problem described the solutions going from least to most extreme are:
  1. Relaxed
  2. Wide
  3. Extra Wide
  4. Custom Curve - slider set to maximum at far right end

You can also use custom curve to fine tune the response in between any of the options described. Hope this helps.

I already tried that one, anything stronger(?) than Relaxed has the opposite effect for some reason and Relaxed doesn't seem to do anything.

I tried many things again right now and ended up with:
• Custom Response Curve weaker than Relaxed (8 ticks to the left)
• -4 ticks on the Sensitivity of both axis
• 0 Inner Dead Zone and maximum Outer Deadzone ("Configuration" is selected).
All that got me was maybe 3% more space, from 5% to 8%.

Steam's descriptions of Response Curve really make this seem so simple, yet it doesn't work.
The Aggressive option works as intended, though.

Any other setting I'm missing or some other software?

(Once again, the sticks are ok, tested on gamepad-tester dot com
I just want to RP walk from time to time.
I've read in controller vs keyboard discussions, people saying they prefer controller because of the easy analog movement...
And I've seen in let's plays, people walking in games like it's the easiest thing to do! In all directions!)

You haven't mentioned what controller or game this problem of yours applies to, it doesn't seem completely safe to assume you're talking about the steam controller even though this is primarily a discussion area for that. It might be that the controller maps a lot of range on to a small area around the center and/or has a large built in deadzone excluding some of the lower range of stick pull sensitivity. Similarly the games may just map a very small range to the walking action, although this seems improbable as you mention having this problem over a large number of games.

In principle this can be bypassed if the game supports mouse and keyboard and has a walk or run function, by mapping the controller to emulate those and assigning an appropriately large area of a stick to a walk or run modifier key as appropriate, but that comes with its own host of problems such as in-game glyphs describing inappropriate buttons and the joystick becoming an 8-way control instead of an analog stick, and the probable loss of rumble functionality.

So I tried again last night with Shadowman Remastered. I was playing on the Steam Deck, which is basically a Steam Controller. No matter which adjustments I made to Deadzone, Acceleration, etc, I could not get a wider area of walking. It would only walk with the slightest push of the Analog stick, and moving just a hair further increased the speed to a jog.

have you tried keeping the Steam Input settings on default and changing the deadzone setting in Shadowman?
Canadian Gamer Sep 21, 2022 @ 6:33pm
I will check it out soon!

You can have a layer with a different sensitivity scale than the default action set.

Lower the sensitivity horizontal and vertical scales. This will be for walking.
Increase the output anti-deadzone. This will initiate the walk sooner.

Go to the outer ring binding and apply a hold action layer button. The outer ring binding radius should be set to where you want the run to begin. Set sensitivity horizontal and vertical scales to maximum. When the outer ring binding is reached you will run and when it is released you will walk.

What about if the movement speed is fully analog, not just two states? I will try this out next time I am playing.
Dereshi Sep 28, 2022 @ 7:38pm
I've been trying that for some hours.
Simplifying things, I lowered the sensitivity on the default Layer ("Walk"), and increase it on the new Action Layer ("Run"), but I don't know how to switch between them, even with a bigger outer ring radius to make it easy.
Can't hear any beep and it always seem like I'm on regular max sensitivity. Tried "Apply", "Remove" and "Maintain" Action Layer.
Step by step?
ugafan Sep 28, 2022 @ 7:45pm
On the default set, add a regular press hold layer to the outer ring binding. The layer will automatically inherit that command so you don't have to do anything there.
Dereshi Sep 28, 2022 @ 8:37pm
"Outer ring binding"is the one right above "Aditional Settings"?
And what is a "regular press hold layer"?
Sorry mine is in portuguese, I have to translate everything.
I have been using the little 3 dots (...) and tried the "Apply", "Remove" and "Maintain" Action Layer. from it.
