USB Hub Connectivity
My Steam controller works if I plug it into my tower directly, but when I try to use the wireless dongle with my USB hub[www.amazon.com], it doesn't work. In fact, it kills the hub. I have to restart my computer to get the hub working again.

Is there something I can do to let it work with my hub, or am I just out of luck? I'm running Windows 10, btw.

is it a powered hub?
cammelspit Nov 17, 2015 @ 12:29pm
Yeah prolly not powered. Its super common to have hubs just not work with devises that dont have their own power like the USB dongle.

Super later replying since I didn't get an email notification to the thread. but it is a powered hub.

Even with powered hubs, some things just don't play well with 'em. Whatever else you have plugged into it may also have en effect...it's possible you're putting too much drain on the hub.

I had forgotten all about this thread, so long ago. But yeah I agree, there are too many variables to say for sure. I have tried in my $9 not powered USB hub of incredible crapness and it worked fine, even with all 3 other ports having wireless receivers for various devices in them.

USB hubs are more complicated than it can seem. There is much variance in bandwidth availability, power provision and even grounding. Short of using an unpowered hub for mouse and keyboard or mouse and flash stick or some other low power use on a laptop (may even work with the SC dongle), I would avoid all powered USB hubs. If you really need one you should buy an expensive model after much research, but even then you need to realise some things will want a direct connection what ever you try.

Do not directly connect the SC dongle to a USB3 port (or even near a USB3 port) however. EM interference on the 2.4GHz band is a well known problem with USB3 and it will dampen the signal on your SC dongle. An extension cable (provided) is a great idea even if a hub is not working for you.

That could be the problem then, since my hub is USB3. Or it could be any host of other problems. In any case I have the dongle plugged directly into the back of my PC now. Thanks for the replies!

I use the 4 Port Amazon Basics USB 3.0 Powered Hub, You use the 7 Port Amazon Basics USB 3.0 Powered Hub, Mine works perfectly...Have you tried every port on your hub???
Have you checked different ports to Plug your USB 3.0 Hub/SC Donggle into?? And I mean both in various combinations...Plug the USB Cable into the hub for these trouble shooting steps and then plug the SC donggle into it and see what happens.. It's the way I have mine hooked up...
Cheers and Leave Us know if it works:steamhappy:

If you plug the donglle into it's cord and try to remove it, it might get stuck...Don't panic and force it out...Get a butter knife and GENTLY pry it out!!! Slowly!!! It has broke on other peoples dongle when removing it from the cable...Try my troubleshooting steps above from #8 on this thread..
Good Luck dude!!:steamhappy:

I was just thinking, is the hub plugged into the back or front USBs? I have had issues with some devices plugging into risers in the past so that ANOTHER thing you should check. :)
