Desktop configuration set to gamepad. Not working.

So I have a few older games/stuff that simply wont work in steam at all. No problem I thought! I will just use the Desktop Configuration and set it to gamepad (it worked great for mouse/keyboard). The problem is no games/emulators will recognize any input from the controller once it is set to gamepad mode. Is this a bug or what? I always have steam running in the background and switching from gamepad to mouse/keyboard makes it work fine but for some games/emulators it would be much better using the controller in gamepad mode.

I tried emulators with support for both Direct input/Xinput and while in desktop mode no input got detected from the controller.

Have you managed to use a general gamepad mode in desktop configuration and if it worked in what games/emulators did it work.

Try running them in windowed mode instead of full screen, perhaps?

Probably because the Desktop binding uses the Legacy Binding, meaning that your steam controller emulates your keyboard and mouse, not the controller, maybe if you set the game to work with keyboard+mouse instead of the gamepad it should work. Maybe give us more information or an example with a game you tried to use but wasn't working.

For example. Trials Fusion works in BPM/launched from steam but doesn't react on input when started outside steam and this game needs gamepad mode to be playable.
Project 64 doesn't react on any input when started from desktop (and this one doesn't play well with steam).
Tried a port of doom64 that behaves the same. Launched from steam gamepad mode works fine but launched from desktop no input when controller is set to gamepad.

If there is a gamepad option/preset for desktop mode it should work. There are many legacy games that might be problematic running with steam and to be able to set your desktop config to a basic gamepad mode seems like a basic thing to me. Since I haven't gotten ANY games/emulators to work with the steam controller set to gamepad in the desktop configuration my question stands. Should it work and have you gotten it to work and with what game/emulator.

During all my testing steam was always running even if I weren't starting games trough steam. Setting the desktop preset to keyboard/mouse works in ANY application/game I start.

Maybe you can add those games as non steam games to your library so you can do different configurations for them and bind the keys with the legacy key mode to the gamepad buttons. Tell me if it works!

Nothing works on the desktop for me when set to controller. Haptics change so I know that steam has changed what the controller is supposed to be, but windows never detects it.

It may be sofware incompatibilties. I believe there was an issue with razer drivers or something razer related causing the controller to not work completely mention a few times here, but I haven't really looked into it.

For trials, yes and for project64, no. But the question wasn't about steam compatible games, it was about non steam compatible games. If you can set gamepad in desktop configuration it should behave like a gamepad in desktop mode. Otherwise there is something wrong.

Okay so same as I have experienced so far then. Did it used to work earlier? I only just got my SC.

Unfortunately no. Its been borked for me since they added the ability to changed the desktop config.

Would this also be the reason that the XBox controller emulation configuration doesn't work in the Unreal Editor? There's another thread on the issue, but my 3 XBox controllers are currently occupied in the living room. :)

It is about Dolphin but can basically be used for Project 64 as well. The explanations helped me out a lot.

I'm still having this issue, but there are 2000+ "Users" of various gamepad-centric community profiles in desktop configuration, so is this solvable somehow?
